Now retired, Dr. Pifer enjoyed a very fulfilling career in psychology and academia that spanned more than 30 years. Transitioning into higher education after several years in the field, he was recruited by Sauk Valley Community College in Dixon, Illinois, in 1981. Having spent the next 30 years on campus, Dr. Pifer rose to associate professor of psychology and social sciences. He also served on the college's safety committee and research and ethics committee.
Prior to his long and successful tenure at the college, Dr. Pifer spent several years as a vocational rehabilitation unit coordinator at the McKercher Rehabilitation Center. In his role, he worked with long-term, mentally ill, and intellectually impaired patients who had been recently released from state hospitals and other facilities.
As a seasoned researcher and scholar, Dr. Pifer has authored several professional articles and has presented them at various professional conferences throughout Chicago. His most recent contribution was presented at the Association for the Development of Philosophy Teaching (ADOPT) Fall Chicago Conference in 2017 and titled 'Fall ADOPT-Questions for Philosophy: Some Answers — Even More Questions." Dr. Pifer has also authored numerous workbooks that served as study guides for nursing and psychology students. Apart from his industry-related works, he wrote a travel guide for those interested in traveling to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
Presently pursuing philosophical studies in the area of stoicism, Dr. Pifer is writing a self-help book that involves stoic thought. The working title of the book is "Enduring and Flourishing: Stoicism for Daily Life."
Civically, Dr. Pifer has contributed to various environmental organizations, including The Nature Conservancy, the Sierra Club, and Greenpeace.
Highly educated in his respected field, Dr. Pifer earned a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Indiana University at South Bend in 1972, a Master of Arts and Letters with an emphasis in general psychology at Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana, in 1975, a Master of Arts in clinical psychology with honors at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo in 1980. Returning to college he earned a Doctor of Naturopathic Psychology at Kingdom College of Natural Health in 2018. Dr. Pifer also earned credentials as a certified herbalist through the Rose School of Herbalism in 2015.
Adding to his credentials, Dr. Pifer has been a member of numerous industry-related organizations, including ADOPT, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the National Center for Science Education, the New York Academy of Sciences.
Honoring his teaching endeavors, Dr. Pifer was recognized as the Professor of the Year at Sauk Valley Community College.
