After working for many years in the field of education, Dr. Veltri retired from his role as an associate professor of urology and oncology at John Hopkins University's School of Medicine, where he also served as the director of the Fisher Biomarker and Biorepository Laboratory. In this capacity, he worked on the development of quantitative digital image analysis to quantify nuclear structure, tissue architecture, immunohistochemistry and more. Along with Case Western Reserve University's biomedical engineering and Carnegie Mellon Biomedical engineering departments, Dr. Veltri conducted research on nuclear and tissue morphometry by employing sophisticated computerized image analysis, segmentation, and feature extraction tools to quantitatively model tumor morphology on digitized tissue slides.
Previously, Dr. Veltri worked as the president of American Biotechnology Co., the vice president of research and development and the chief science officer for Cytodiagnostics Inc. Over the years, he also served in executive positions with UroCor Inc., Theracel Corp., American Biotechnology Co., and Cooper Biomedical. During the early stages of his career, Dr. Veltri gained valuable expertise in education through West Virginia University, through which he served as a professor, associate professor, and assistant professor. In conjunction with his work, Dr. Veltri dedicated himself to the American Cancer Society and the National Foundation for Cancer Research.
Driven to remain abreast of changes in the field, Dr. Veltri aligned himself with the American Academy of Microbiology, the American Urology Association, the American Association of Cancer Research, the American Association of Immunologists, the Association of University Technology Managers, served as a member of the National Society of Clinical Chemistry in the area of immunology, and served as President of the West Virginia University chapter of Sigma Xi. An expert in his field, he initially studied at Youngstown State University, from which he earned a Bachelor of Arts in biology and chemistry in 1963. Following this accomplishment, Dr. Veltri went on to earn a Master of Science in microbiology and a Doctor of Philosophy from West Virginia University in 1965 and 1969, respectively.
Well-regarded for his vast breadth of knowledge, Dr. Veltri has authored or co-authored more than 250 articles with the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions department of urology and oncology. He also published articles in AACR Journals as well as PNAS, CELL, and PLOS One. Additionally, he holds United States patents in gene discovery, immunomodification therapeutics, anti-viral therapies, new biomarkers for prostate cancer, and urologic tumor markers.
In light of his professional achievements, Dr. Veltri has won a number of awards, including recognition as an outstanding reviewer by the Journal of Urology between 2009 and 2012, and a Certificate of Recognition from Governor Keating for Services Rendered to the Oklahoma Center for the Advancement of Science and Technology in 2001. Likewise, he earned several grants through the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Defense, was named a fellow through the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology, and received an Outstanding Teacher Award. Within the coming years, Dr. Veltri aims to continue serving on various boards within the industry.
