Drawing on over five decades of expertise in the academic field, Mr. Bobek specializes in science education. He initially began his career working as a teacher at the Archdiocese of Chicago from 1971 and is still teaching as of 2023. Since 1973, he has also found much success as a junior high school teacher at St. Daniel the Prophet School. In this capacity, he teaches earth science, life science and biology to seventh and eighth graders, with about 27 students in each class. Mr. Bobek spent ten summers teaching in the Young Learners' Program at Daley Junior College teaching subjects as varied as Reading, Art, Math, and Chess to third to eighth graders. Additionally, between 2012 and 2022, he was active as an athletics director for the St. Daniel the Prophet School. Outside of his main vocation, Mr. Bobek has authored "The Games of War: A Treasury of Rules for Battles with Toy Soldiers, Ships and Planes" in 2007.
Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Mr. Bobek pursued an education at the University of Illinois Chicago, where he earned a bachelor's degree in education and sociology, with minors in English and history in 1971. His graduate work in Earth Science was from Notre Dame University but onsite at Montana State University. As a commitment to his field, he has been active with several industry-related organizations, including the St. Daniel the Prophet School Sports Board, the Parish Pastoral Council, the Southside Catholic Conference Board (current Chairman) and the Region II Board for the Illinois Junior Academy of Science. Likewise dedicated to civic advocacy, Mr. Bobek contributes to his local church and ministry, and serves as a chancel choir member and a cantor. He spent years teaching Religious Education Program students at Queen of the Universe and St. Daniel the Prophet parishes, as well as chaperoning teens for St. Mary Star of the Sea parish. Mr. Bobek was also a co-chair of the St. Mary Star of the Sea parish outreach to singles. He was active in running Theology on Tap programs at St. Mary Star of the Sea and St. Daniel the Prophet parishes. He was also on the planning committee for the late Cardinal Bernadin's Theology on Tap party at the Cardinal's residence. While not currently coaching, he has coached boys' basketball, boys' floor hockey, flag football, and girls' softball at St. Daniel the Prophet School.
Well regarded for his contributions to the field, Mr. Bobek has been nominated for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, the National Certificate of Educational Achievement Distinguished Teacher Award, the Archdiocesan Heart of the School Award and the Catholic Youth Organization Volunteer of the Year Award. Additionally, he has received the Queen of Peace High School Teachers Who Make a Difference Award and featured in the Who's Who Among America's Teachers publication. Most recently, Mr. Bobek was awarded the Meritorious Service Award for 2022 from the Illinois State Board of Education. Among his professional accomplishments, he is most proud of his of overseeing the Illinois State Science Exposition as the President of the Illinois Junior Academy of Science, and of successfully conducting a virtual science fair during COVID-19. Looking toward the future, Mr. Bobek aspires to write a faith-based book for individuals who are not as religious but seek to have a better connection to their spirituality.
