After retiring at the rank of major from the United States Army, Mr. McCleish successfully transitioned to the civilian sector. In fact, he served in the military for 22 years, including nine years of active duty and 13 years dedicated to the Army National Guard, and his assignments were diverse, calling for collaboration across platforms such as satellite communications and cyber security engineering. He has accumulated nearly three decades of practical experience in niche IT applications: currently, he is a senior engineering leader on the S3 / MAST ADC Team at Amazon Web Services (AWS), a position he accepted in 2022 after serving as the principal group engineering manager for Azure AD at Microsoft from 2018 to 2022. At Microsoft, his team crafted clouds from scratch to support the United States government. Notably, from 2015 to 2018, Mr. McCleish was the chief technology officer – Strategy, Operations, Engineering and Cyber Security with the U.S. Navy Engineering Logistics Organization; he counts oversight of all of the Navy's classified networks around the globe as one of his most significant professional achievements.
Mr. McCleish has held distinct titles in both the military and civilian arenas, including lead wireless / LAN architect with BAE Systems from 2008 to 2010, and deputy director of enterprise infrastructure for USCIS between 2014 and 2016. Furthermore, in 2014, he was both a chief of technology in Iraq and a senior program director for the NGA; the year prior, he occupied the same lead role in Afghanistan operations, and between 2010 and 2013, Mr. McCleish served as the wireless program manager and lead system engineer for the NGA. In 2008, he excelled as part of the team of engineers working with the Air Force to pioneer a secured mobile phone that accommodated top-secret conversations, and he was called upon to advise the White House on how to facilitate something similar for the president at the time. In 2005, Mr. McCleish also proudly collaborated on building the Department of Defense network.
Academic achievements are a vital platform of support for Mr. McCleish's military advancement and professional success. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Telecom Management from DeVry University, which he completed in 2002, as well as a Master of Management Information Systems from Webster University, earned in 2008. Commendations from the military have also marked Mr. McCleish's milestones; in fact, was recognized for his dedication with a Meritorious Service Medal in 2022 and commended for his leadership excellence while participating in advanced officer training.
Mr. McCleish is a valued member of multiple industry organizations, including the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) and The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). He attributes his success thus far to a resolute work ethic and refined leadership abilities, and he counts both as a critical dimension to the balance he strikes between his earned technical background and inspired mentorship.
