Ms. Karlan has received several prestigious awards; including the President's Award of Merit from The Florida Bar

A legal professional with more than 45 years of experience, Ms. Karlan founded KarlanResolutions, LLC in 2015, specializing as a mediator, arbitrator, private judge, consultant, special magistrate, and expert witness. She currently performs mediations and arbitrations, serves as a senior judge, and testifies as an expert witness in cases requiring advanced interpretations of the law. Ms. Karlan also teaches bankruptcy and family law courses to other judges and lawyers.
Notably, Ms. Karlan is a retired Administrative Circuit Court Judge for the Eleventh Judicial Circuit of Florida. In 1995, she was appointed to the Circuit Court bench by the Governor of Florida. Before ascending to the bench, Ms. Karlan was a partner at a Miami law firm where she practiced commercial and bankruptcy litigation, as well as family law. Additionally, she is a published author on bankruptcy and family law, and co-author of a Florida Bar Journal article on best practices for Florida courts.
Passionate about the well-being of women and children, Ms. Karlan initially became an attorney to advocate on their behalf. Her mother, Muriel E. Richter, was a distinguished attorney who was selected for the first edition of Marquis Who's Who of American Women in 1959. Sandy's mother was her primary motivator; impacting both her personal and professional development by insisting that she obtain the highest and best education possible. Ms. Karlan's father, a former New York Giants professional football player and successful travel entrepreneur, influenced her decision to enter the travel industry. After several years in that sector however, Ms. Karlan chose to pursue a law degree.
Ms. Karlan is a member of both the American and Florida Bar Foundations and chaired the Legal Needs of Children Committee for the Florida Bar. Committed to giving back, she also generously donates to many organizations, including Florida's Children First, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Humane Society International, Children of the Forest and NPR.
Ms. Karlan earned her undergraduate degree in English with a minor in philosophy at the University of Miami in 1971, followed by a Doctor of Jurisprudence cum laude at Nova Southeastern University in 1978. Subsequently, Ms. Karlan also earned Florida Bar board certification in Marital and Family law and Florida Supreme Court certification as a mediator.
Active with numerous professional organizations, Ms. Karlan is a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute, the Collaborative Family Law Institute, and the International Academy of Family Lawyers. She also is a member of the Arbitration and Mediation panels of the American Arbitration Association, a board member of the Florida First Family Law American Inn of Court, and former president of both the Florida chapter of the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts and the Florida Association for Women Lawyers.
In recognition of her professional accomplishments and civic contributions, Ms. Karlan has received several prestigious awards; including the President's Award of Merit from The Florida Bar, the Mattie Bell Davis Award from the Florida Association for Women Lawyers, Child Advocate of the Year Award from the Florida Bar Commission on the Legal Needs of Children, and Community Service Awards from both the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, and Mellon United National Bank. Ms. Karlan is most proud of receiving the Sojourner Truth Award from the National Organization for Women in 1989, which honored her advocacy work on women's issues.
Ms. Karlan is married to Joe Lupo, a former professional boxer and 2015 inductee into the National Fitness Hall of Fame.
