Roger McLimans Celebrates a Career in Geological Research

Dr. Roger K. McLimans is highly regarded independent geological consultant with 50 years of experience to his name. Since 2015, he has devoted his expertise to his consultancy, specializing in geological investigations and research.

At the start of his professional journey, Dr. McLimans enrolled at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in geology and Earth science in 1969. Subsequently, he attained a master's degree in geology and Earth science from the University of Minnesota Duluth in 1971 and then gained initial field experience working with the Lindgren Exploration Co. and the Resource Associates of Alaska. In 1976, Dr. McLimans concluded his academic efforts with a Doctor of Philosophy in geochemistry from the Pennsylvania State University College of Earth and Mineral Sciences, which also awarded him with the Best Paper at the 1975 Earth Sciences Graduate School Colloquium.

For one year, Dr. McLimans joined the faculty at Northern Illinois University, where he taught economic geology as an assistant professor until 1976. At this time, he joined the Petroleum Exploration Research and Development Division at CONOCO as a research scientist and was also supervisor of the Chemical and Carbonate Geology Section. For 11 years, programs to his roster included microscopy, analytical systems, petrography and reservoir modeling.

Progressing in his career, Dr. McLimans served as a technical research fellow at the E.I. DuPont Company from 1988 to 2013. During his nearly 30-year tenure, he led worldwide geological exploration programs to locate and process titanium ores from various geological environments, including new sources in metamorphic rocks. The work also included an assessment of the analytical methods for ore chemistry, for which he earned a Six Sigma Green Belt. During this time, in 2009, he participated in a Danish geological expedition along the west coast of Greenland. Likewise, from 2013 to 2015, Dr. McLimans worked for the Chemours Company, leading programs in geology and geophysics to define subsurface reservoirs for process waste injection.

In a career filled with highlights, Dr. McLimans feels particularly proud to have received the George C. Matson Award for Best Technical Paper for "Applications of Fluid Inclusions to Oil Exploration" in 1981. The honor was presented to him at the American Association of Petroleum Geologists Annual Meeting and it was later published in Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta. In addition, he was co-inventor of a Laser-Enhanced Oil Correlation System that received a U.S. Patent in 1991 and has contributed numerous articles to professional journals.

Upon reflection, Dr. McLimans attributes his success to having great advisors, including Dr. H. L. Barnes and Dr. H. Ohmoto at Penn State University; Dr. R. Ojakangas and Dr. R. Marsden at the University of Minnesota Duluth; and Dr. C. Craddock at the University of Wisconsin. He cites those incredible minds as solid influences on where he ended up in his career. A distinguished Marquis listee, Dr. McLimans lives in Wilmington, Delaware, with his wife Mary, with whom they share one son and three grandchildren.
