Drawing on over several years of expertise, Mr. Uchida specializes in real estate development and project management. Since 2001, at different times, he has found much success as a senior project development manager at SSFM International, Inc. From 2021 thru the end of 2022, he was the Director of the Department of Planning and Permitting with the City and County of Honolulu, which is responsible for Planning, Land Use Permits, and all building and construction permits for work within the City and County of Honolulu. Mr. Uchida initially began his career working at the Department of Land and Natural Resources where he became the Administrator of the Land Division. The Land Division is responsible for management of all the state-owned lands in Hawaii, which is roughly 1.2 million acres. After leaving the State, he was a project management group deputy at SSFM International Inc., a professional consulting and engineering firm that provides planning, project, program and construction management, civil, structural and traffic engineering, as well as transportation and real estate development services.
Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Mr. Uchida pursued an education at the University of Oregon, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in geography in 1980. He continued his academic efforts at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, earning a Master of Arts in geography in 1983, followed by a Master of Science in systems management from the University of Southern California in 1986. As a commitment to his field, he has been active with several industry-related organizations, including the Building Industry Association of Hawaii. Likewise dedicated to civic advocacy, Mr. Uchida contributes to the Land Use Research Foundation of Hawaii, the local Homeowners Association and the Parent-Teacher Association.

Reflecting on his career, he attributes much of his success to the mentorship of his father and Bill, the former chairperson of the Department of Land and Natural Resources.
