Mr. Riley is an entrepreneur who recently established SJR Riley & Company LLC/The Day Hiker, in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Named after him, his wife, and their daughter, The Day Hiker was started over 20 years ago and purchased by Mr. Riley in early 2022. The Day Hiker offers hiking gear and accessories, t-shirts, books and maps, medallions, and souvenirs. Additionally, Mr. Riley maintains a one-of-a-kind engraving business in Sevierville, TN called Destination Laser, which specializes in making wooden maps, magnets, keychains, and ornaments for wholesale.
The Water Source was a business Mr. Riley owned between 2006 and 2021, it focused on bottling water and making custom-labeled water bottles in Memphis, TN. Mr. Riley founded the company and in 2008 he hired a third-party logistics company to maintain The Water Source so that he could work on several water projects for the U.S. Government overseas. While in Iraq and Afghanistan from January 2008 to mid-2013, he worked on projects to make clean water on forward operating bases for soldiers.
Before his entrepreneurial involvement, Mr. Riley worked as a law enforcement ranger at Cape Hatteras National Seashore, which serves to preserve the Outer Banks of North Carolina. He also gained experience as an assistant and special events coordinator for the Memphis Zoo and Aquarium shortly after graduating high school.
Avid about giving back, Mr. Riley has volunteered his time with One Family Memphis and has sponsored the local Winter Fest for The Boy Scouts of America. He is also a life member of Unity Masonic Lodge in Memphis and is recognized as an Eagle Scout of the Boy Scouts of America. Most notably, Mr. Riley is a strong supporter of the Memphis Rox Climbing and Community Center, a nonprofit climbing gym and community center in the Soulsville neighborhood of Memphis, Tennessee.
Mr. Riley completed parks, recreation, and leisure facilities management coursework at the University of Memphis between 1991 and 1994. He attended college with the assistance of a vocational rehabilitation scholarship.
In recognition of his work at forward operating base Deleram II, Mr. Riley was honored by Regimental Combat Team 8 in Afghanistan when they flew a flag in his honor and subsequently delivered it to him on Christmas Eve in 2011.
