JACKSONVILLE, FL, March 07, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- John F. O'Sullivan, Jr. has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
John F. O'Sullivan, Jr. ascribes his many accomplishments to the mentorship of his parents. His father was a U.S. Army officer who served during World War II and Korea, and his mother was a home economics and fourth grade teacher. The family eventually settled in Indianapolis, Indiana, where the elder Colonel O'Sullivan used his civil engineering degree to establish a construction company, allowing John to learn construction skills and project planning. John's pride in his father's contributions during two wars led him to a military career while his mother's commitment to teaching led him to obtain an education undergraduate degree. He attributes joining the Air Force, rather than following his father's footsteps, to his participation in the Civil Air Patrol.
After graduating from Indiana University with a bachelor's degree in education and courses in ROTC, John O'Sullivan went to the Keesler Air Force Base for training as an officer in the field of command, control, communications, and computer systems. John was first assigned to fly the airborne command post of Strategic Air Command. Afterwards, he participated in two conflicts including one year in Vietnam and later in Desert Storm. Colonel O'Sullivan served in five command positions including as the commander of the 2184th communications squadron and 2045th communications group and lastly he held the positions of deputy director and director of the J6 (command, control, and communication) directorate of CINCPAC. A major point of pride was his contribution to the development of the Milstar satellite system and Global Positioning System (GPS). Colonel O'Sullivan received a Bronze Star medal and the Communications Electronics Professional Achievement medal, among many others. Of special note is the colonel's appointment and graduation from the National War College, whose mission is to educate future leaders of the military in national security strategy. He also received a Master of Business Administration from Western New England University.
After his stellar military career, Colonel O'Sullivan returned to the field of education, accepting a position as assistant superintendent of a North Carolina school district. The colonel served as the deputy superintendent in Rochester, New York followed by the superintendent of school districts in Georgia and Minnesota, improving student performance, especially in mathematics and English. Upon retirement, Colonel O'Sullivan was a sought-after consultant in methods to improve student performance. Colonel O'Sullivan is grateful to have been selected to carry the torch for the Olympic Games and for all those happy times coaching a refereeing soccer at the high school and collegiate level.
Currently, Colonel O'Sullivan mentors local high school students, who are participating in CyberPatriot competitions, offered by the Air Force Association. He attributes his success to his educational background, his determination and the support of his first wife, Maureen, who had a distinguished career in rehabilitation counseling. Together, they raised two daughters. The eldest daughter, Kelly Gwyn, is a registered nurse in North Carolina while his younger daughter, Captain Shauna O'Sullivan , DO is a board certified rheumatologist and has held many leadership roles in the U.S. Navy. Colonel O'Sullivan, along with his present wife, Cynthia, a professor emeritus, is happily devoting his time to two grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.
