A standout athlete since childhood, Mr. Hughes developed a passion for tennis while attending Muskingum University in New Concord, Ohio. Prior to obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in music education, he honed his tennis expertise on a daily basis in order to match the prowess of the aforementioned university's tennis team. Upon his graduation in 1975, Mr. Hughes was recruited by his uncle to teach basic tennis fundamentals to young children at said uncle's tennis club.
During the 1990s and early 2000s, Mr. Hughes thrived as the assistant junior development coordinator at the Glen Creek Tennis Club in South Park Township, Pennsylvania. He also found success as a music teacher for the Madison Local School District in Guernsey County, Ohio, where he simultaneously excelled as the choir and band director, for several years. Along with organizing tournaments and helping children and adults improve their tennis skills, Mr. Hughes completed the necessary training to earn certifications as a professional tennis instructor on behalf of the United States Tennis Association (USTA) and the Professional Tennis Registry.
In 2006, Mr. Hughes was appointed as the manager and head tennis professional of the Mount Lebanon Tennis Center, which is among the largest tennis facilities in the state of Pennsylvania. In addition to overseeing daily operations and regular maintenance of 15 tennis courts, he manages more than 30 employees and frequently coordinates tournaments involving hundreds of competitors. Mr. Hughes also currently works as the owner of Mount Lebanon Tennis Center's pro shop, which offers a vast selection of tennis equipment and apparel.
Throughout his tenure at the Mount Lebanon Tennis Center, Mr. Hughes has coached multiple nationally ranked junior players, one of whom advanced to the rank of number 800 in the entire world. He has additionally served as the president of the USTA Middle States section and has been selected as the Pro of the Year by the USTA's Allegheny Mountain District, which consists of 24 counties in western Pennsylvania and four counties in West Virginia. In 2010, Mr. Hughes was celebrated as the Tournament Director of the Year on behalf of the aforementioned district.
Mr. Hughes attributes a great deal of his success to his notable work ethic as well as his consistent pursuit of excellence throughout his career. He strongly advises aspiring tennis professionals to read Malcolm Gladwell's "Outliers," which continuously motivated him to devote tremendous time and effort towards the perfection of his instructional capabilities. In the coming years, Mr. Hughes intends to settle into retirement while maintaining his involvement in the local tennis community as an umpire.
