Leveraging more than two decades of excellence in parish ministry and hospice care, Dr. Kuykendall has earned distinction as senior pastor for Zwingli United Church of Christ in Souderton, Pennsylvania. Since 2007, he has focused efforts on providing oversight for the church's ministry, providing spiritual leadership and faith development through worship, education, congregational care, and administration. From 2008 to 2011, he helped lead the church through the aftermath of a devastating fire and subsequent rebuild. Additionally, he has lent his expertise as a volunteer hospice chaplain for Grand View Health since 2004.
Prior to his current role, Dr. Kuykendall began his career as associate pastor for First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Las Vegas, Nevada in 1993 and was protestant campus chaplain through the Protestant Campus Ministry Board, serving students at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in 1996 -1997. From 1998 until 2007, he served as associate pastor for Zwingli United Church of Christ.
Dr. Kuykendall also was a pool chaplain for the hospice department of Grand View Health in 2005. He served as the chaplain for the Doctor of Ministry Intensive Weeks for Lancaster Theological Seminary in 2020-2021 and was a course instructor for their Pennsylvania Academy of Ministry in 2022. Over the course of his career, he has also contributed published works to the field, including a chapter in the "Public Health Encyclopedia: Principles, People, and Programs" in 2018 and the book "Grief and Loss: Your Questions Answered (Q&A Health Guides)" in 2020. He has also presented his research locally and nationally.
Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Kuykendall earned a Bachelor of Science in chemistry with a minor in religious studies from Randolph-Macon College in 1982. He then attained a Master of Arts in philosophy from the University of Colorado, Boulder in 1991 and a Master of Divinity from Duke University in 1995. He subsequently gained a Doctor of Ministry focusing on spiritual care and volunteer training from the Lancaster Theological Seminary in 2016. Well-qualified in his field, he is an ordained minister with the United Church of Christ and a certified Stephen Leader with Stephen Ministries.
Within the coming years, Dr. Kuykendall intends to retire after guiding Zwingli United Church of Christ to reflect on their ministry priorities for the 21st century. He also hopes to continue as a volunteer chaplain for hospice and roles in the wider church.
