Dr. McConnell celebrates more than five decades of expertise in geriatric medicine and senior care. He earned a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from the Kansas City University of Osteopathic Medicine in 1965 and went on to become board certified in both family medicine and geriatrics. Dr. McConnell was inspired to pursue a career in medicine by the father of a family friend who practiced family practice and obstetrics. He impressed a young Dr. McConnell with his work ethic, integrity, and commitment to his patients.
Early in his practice, Dr. McConnell was invited to become the director of a nursing home by one of his existing patients. There, he fell in love with geriatric medicine and the unique rewards of working with elderly patients. Between 1974 and 2012, Dr. McConnell was a geriatric medicine instructor at Ohio University and Wright State University, where he advocated for the specialty to his students. He continued his clinical work as medical director for the Fundamental Consulting Group from 1999 until 2011, and as longtime medical director of the Troy Care and Rehabilitation Center, where he served from 1994 until 2021. Dr. McConnell also held executive leadership roles at general care facilities, including two terms as president of the family practice department at Grandview Hospital and Medical Center, Dayton Ohio. He held two terms as President of the Ohio Medical Directors Association.
Dr. McConnell considers his time at Troy Care and Rehabilitation to be the highlight of a long and fulfilling career. As medical director, he implemented an integrated care model that included all providers in shared responsibilities and increased communication with patients, staff, and families, and ultimately improved facility standards enough to earn a Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations certification. As an educator, Dr. McConnell emphasized to his residents the importance of big-picture health outcomes and discouraged an overreliance on pharmaceutical interventions. He began teaching a course on how to safely discontinue medication.
In recognition of his dedication to care, Dr. McConnell was nominated for Medical Director of the Year by the American Medical Directors Association and was named 2013 Educator of the Year by the Ohio Osteopathic Association. He was the author of a monthly column on mentoring residents for the American Medical Directors Association and the Society for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine. In his personal time, Dr. McConnell is active in volunteerism and community efforts including service in his church cross-reach ministry, donations to the community of Freeport, Bahamas, and a past position on the board of the YMCA of Greater Dayton and the board of the Freeport YMCA.
