Supported by several years of experience in educational leadership, Ms. Mixon is dedicated to providing high-quality Art education and working with teachers to enhance student learning. To prepare for her career in teaching, she earned a master's degree from the University of Connecticut in 2014. She initially worked as a high school music director at New London High School from 2014 to 2017, and then served as a special education teacher for the 2017-2018 school year in Kailua, HI. In 2018, she joined H.E. Bonner Elementary School, a partial arts magnet and Title 1 school, which serves a large rural area, where she served as a music teacher. In 2021, she was installed as an instructional coach with a focus on Arts/Arts integration.
Ms. Mixon is presently the interdisciplinary instructional coach for Arts integration at H.E. Bonner Elementary School. In this capacity, she collaborates with the art team for their arts standards based instruction while working with classroom teachers to improve art integration and art lessons. Ms. Mixon's goal is to identify ways to use the Arts to enhance students' education, allowing them to gain a deeper understanding of concepts demonstrated by teachers. She models and co-teaches with the other instructors, often working with the special area team to assist general education teachers to communicate specific concepts effectively. In an effort to remain current with industry trends, Ms. Mixon is a member of the National Association for Music Education.
During the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Ms. Mixon and the fine arts team at H.E. Bonner Elementary School restructured their programs in an attempt to alleviate the stress placed on their students. The team created and uploaded several videos to YouTube for students to spend time enjoying the arts and sharing lessons and activities with their families. For the school's band program, lessons needed to be conducted virtually; however, Ms. Mixon and her team maintained their dedication to providing their students with ample opportunities to learn and enjoy the arts. In recognition of her work and dedication, Ms. Mixon was named Teacher of the Year by a number of institutions, including H.E. Bonner Elementary School, New London High School and Kailua Elementary School.
Ms. Mixon thoroughly enjoys working with teachers to provide students a comprehensive arts education and working with students to increase their involvement in the arts. Her focus is to continue to provide her school with opportunities to increase engagement and success in the Arts. Right now, she can't see herself not being in a school, working directly with students. It is her favorite part of the day. She loves seeing students find success.
