Leveraging his experience as an attorney in practice in Vermont, Mr. Ambrose earned distinction as a local, state, and national leader of non-profit organizations serving and advocating for persons with mental disabilities.
Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Mr. Ambrose earned a Bachelor of Arts in history and government from St. Michael's College in 1968. He then attained a Juris Doctor from the University of Maine School of Law in 1971.
Prior to starting his private career, Mr. Ambrose served honorably as a first lieutenant and squadron administration officer for the United States Air Force from 1971 to 1972. Following his military service, he began his career as an associate attorney with law offices in Montpelier, Vermont and later Burlington, Vermont.
As part of his commitment to improving mental health and disability services in his community, he was the president of the board of directors for the Champlain Sheltered Workshop, president of the board of directors for Howard Mental Health Services, chairman for the Vermont Developmental Disabilities Council and a government affairs committee member for the National Mental Health Association. Additionally, he served as the founder and secretary for the Creative Rental Association, Ltd. and was a founder and board member for the Vermont Developmental Disabilities Protection and Advocacy Inc. Mr. Ambrose served as Board President of the National Council of Community Mental Health Centers.
In 1982 Mr. Ambrose moved to Washington, D.C. and served as the vice president for public affairs for the National Association for Mental Health, and beginning in 1995 he became the general counsel and director of legal and government affairs for the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy.
Now in retirement he remains active as the owner of Talkin' Turkey Provisions in Alexandria, Virginia, distributing high-quality deli meats and other products to fine restaurants and catering companies. He has volunteered as a Court Appointed Special Advocate for the Alexandria Juvenile Court.
Accounting for his professional successes, he credits the support and advocacy he received from his colleagues over the course of his career, having gained many positions on the stellar merits of his reputation.
