Throughout her career as a community activist, Ms. Whealey has been celebrated with a host of accolades.
THE PLAINS, OH, March 09, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Lois Deimel Whealey is a distinguished biographee of Marquis Who's Who. After obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in history from Stanford University in 1951, Ms. Whealey followed in the footsteps of her mother and pursued a career as an educator. Between 1952 and 1953, she taught fifth grade at the Owyhee Combined School in Owyhee, Nevada, while completing a Master of Education at the University of Michigan. Ms. Whealey subsequently taught seventh grade in Kentucky's Fort Knox Community Schools before her recruitment as an adult education teacher with the United States Air Force from 1956 until 1957.
During the late 1950s, Ms. Whealey excelled as a sixth-grade teacher at Amerman Elementary School in Northville, Michigan, and as an eighth grade English and social studies at teacher Slauson Middle School in Ann Arbor. She subsequently focused on raising her three children before resuming her education at Ohio University in Athens, where she earned a Master of Arts in political science. During this period, Ms. Whealey simultaneously worked as an administrative assistant at the Athens-based university.
Following her extensive teaching career, Ms. Whealey found further success in leadership positions with a host of community organizations. Between 1975 and 1978, she was appointed as the treasurer of the Athens County Regional Planning Commission and as the president of the League of Women Voters of Athens County. During the early 1980s, Ms. Whealey prospered as the vice president of the Girl Scouts of Black Diamond, which provides an array of educational and leadership development programs for members of the Girl Scouts of America up to 12 years of age.
From 1984 until 1990, Ms. Whealey was recruited as a board member of Tri-County Career Center as well as the Ohio Environmental Council. Towards the beginning of this period, she also advanced to become the vice president and president of the Athens City School District Board of Education. Throughout the 1990s, Ms. Whealey thrived as the president of the Athens branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and as a board member for the Ohio Alliance for the Environment, which eventually appointed her as the vice president in 1998.
From 2006 until 2020, Ms. Whealey garnered widespread recognition as the host of a public television program titled "Women Yesterday and Today," in which she interviewed highly accomplished women from various professional backgrounds on a weekly basis. During this period, she simultaneously excelled as a board member for Organize! Ohio and Ohio Women Inc. In 2007, Ms. Whealey additionally concluded her education at Ohio University, where she completed a Master of Science in political science.
Throughout her career as a community activist, Ms. Whealey has been celebrated with a host of accolades such as a Spirit Award on behalf of the League of Women Voters of Athens County and the Donna Chen Women's Equity Award on behalf of Ohio University. She has also been distinguished as a Woman of Achievement by the Girl Scouts of Black Diamond, which had previously honored her with a "Thanks" Badge in 1987. Between 2016 and 2017, Ms. Whealey received a Social Justice Award for Contributions Over a Lifetime as well as a Lifetime Achievement Award for Social Justice from the United Campus Ministry at Ohio University.
Ms. Whealey attributes a great deal of her success to the influence of her mother, who notably served as an elected official in the Nevada State Legislature during the 1930s. She is extremely proud to have inspired her daughter and granddaughter to continue her family's legacy of participation with the Girl Scouts of America. Though Ms. Whealey has diminished her activity with AAUW and the League of Women Voters, she continues to play a central role in several community organizations within her beloved hometown of Athens, Ohio.
