Prof. Greyser has never missed a class in more than 50 years, and he shares his wisdom with Star Jones

With two European colleagues, Prof. Greyser has conducted extensive research on heritage brands, which they describe as living in three time zones: the past, present, and future.

BOSTON, MA, March 14, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Stephen A. Greyser has participated in The Star Treatment, a prestigious video series hosted by renowned lawyer and television personality, Star Jones. This premier video series is extremely limited — Marquis Who's Who qualifies 500 listees on an annual basis for this elite service. Backed by a storied career in media that spans more than two decades, Star works closely with Marquis listees to assist with networking goals and commemorative efforts that can be shared with a worldwide audience.

Professor Stephen Greyser is an expert in branding and sports business, with a distinguished career in both fields. In his interview with Star Jones, he shared insights about his background and some of the highlights of his career. Prof. Greyser began by noting his educational background, which includes attending the Boston Latin School, the first school in America, founded in 1635. He also earned degrees from Harvard College and an MBA and doctorate from the Harvard Business School, where, years later, his students affectionately dubbed him "the Cal Ripken of the Harvard Business School," because he never missed a class.

Prof. Greyser's expertise lies in branding, particularly in what he calls "heritage brands," or brands that have a rich history and heritage, spanning multiple generations. Examples of such brands include Patek Philippe, the luxury watchmaker whose slogan is, "you never actually own a Patek Philippe, you simply take care of it for the next generation." Another example would be Nike, whose "Swoosh" logo has become an iconic symbol of the brand. With two European colleagues, Prof. Greyser has conducted extensive research on heritage brands, which they describe as living in three time zones: the past, present, and future.

Another area of Prof. Greyser's research that he highlighted in the interview is his work on branding monarchies. He and his colleagues conducted field-based research with royal courts and royal families to further their study on the subject. They even spent an entire afternoon at the invitation of the King of Sweden and his family, discussing, among other topics, how that monarchy had branded itself.

While Prof. Greyser's academic background is impressive, his passion for sports is also noteworthy. He credits his love for sports to his late father, who took him to his first Red Sox game many decades ago. Prof. Greyser has been a season ticket holder for the Red Sox for over 45 years and is the longest-tenured individual season ticket holder for the Boston Celtics, with over 60 years under his belt.

Prof. Greyser has not only been a sports fan, but he has also worked in sports broadcasting. He broadcast three major sports on the air, including play-by-play and color commentary. He also wrote and produced a pre-game radio show for the Red Sox on their own station. What sets Prof. Greyser apart is his ability to incorporate his love for sports into his educational activities. He is the only Harvard Business School faculty member who has taught two MBA electives in the same year, both of which he created himself: one on corporate communications and the other on sports business. A prolific author, Prof. Greyser is responsible for 17 books, numerous journal articles and over 300 HBS-published case studies. In terms of recognitions within his field, he was elected by competitive ballot to the Market Research Council Hall of Fame for "contributions of outstanding and lasting value" in 2022. Also in 2022 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Bradford in the UK, where he serves on the Advisory Board of the Business School.

Prof. Greyser's expertise in branding and sports business led to an exciting opportunity in 2008 when he participated in televising the Beijing Olympics Opening Ceremonies. He had been asked by CCTV in China to help the Chinese public understand certain sports that were not as familiar to that culture, and he later participated in commentary on the opening ceremonies, where he shared his insights on the branding implications for China. Prof. Greyser was told that up to 100 million people may have seen the segment he was on, which he called "the biggest classroom I've ever had."

Prof. Greyser has had the good fortune of having several mentors throughout his academic and professional journey. His primary mentor was HBS Professor Raymond A. Bauer, a social psychologist of considerable repute. Another was the editor of the Harvard Business Review, Professor Edward Bursk, an HBS professor in the areas of marketing and market research. In addition to his intellectual mentors, Prof. Greyser also had a broadcast mentor, Bob Wolff, for his work in broadcasting. Wolff was honored with induction into two halls of fame for his work in baseball and basketball, which highlights the range of his experience, as well as the significance of his mentorship to Prof. Greyser. In Prof. Greyser's own career, he has made many contributions via his nonprofit service, including national vice chair of PBS, member of the National Advertising Review Board, and founding chair of MFA Boston's Marketing Committee. He also served as magister eventuum, emceeing the BLS 350th and 375th anniversary ceremonies and delivering opening remarks in Latin.

In summary, Prof. Greyser's storied career has seen him make profound contributions to advancing practice in the field of marketing and business, while also exploring his passion for sports, both in his native Boston, and around the world. He considers education a core value for himself and his family, just as his own parents had. Due to his considerable experience in several diverse disciplines, Ms. Jones referred to Prof. Greyser as a true Renaissance man, which is the mark of a truly impressive and memorable career. A proud academic and teacher, his students will no doubt carry fond memories of his lessons for years to come as they advance toward their own professional successes. For these reasons, Prof. Greyser is undoubtedly a worthy recipient of the Star Treatment.
