Following graduation from Gettysburg College, A.B. (philosophy major), June, 1961, and active duty in the U.S. Army, Md. Nat'l Guard (Hon. Discharge Dec. 19, 1962), Mr. Koehler attended a combination of night and day school, and graduated from U. of Md. Law School, LL.B., June, 1965, following which he served for three years as a Federal Estate Tax Examiner, Internal Revenue Service, during which period he enrolled in the night graduate school program of George Washington University and earned an LL.M (Taxation), June 2, 1968. He next worked as an associate for a member of the Maryland Bar, following which he established his own practice in Towson, Maryland, where he practiced business acquisition, private placement finance, estate planning, and family-owned businesses until July 31, 2014, when he retired and moved to Weems, Virginia, to live overlooking the Corrotoman River, and to engage in his favorite hobby, oil painting.
In addition to his practice, Mr. Koehler became a 29% owner of The Reefs Beach Club, Bermuda in 1981, and a 50% owner of Nisbet Plantation Beach Club, St. Kitts-Nevis, British West Indies. Though both ventures ended in dispute with his partner, the resulting litigation produced his most significant contribution to American jurisprudence. As plaintiff and co-counsel, together with Paul F. Newhouse of the Maryland Bar, he was instrumental in obtaining the precedent setting New York Court of Appeals' decision in Koehler v. Bank of Bermuda, 12 N.Y.3d 533, 911 N,E.2d 825 (2009). According to several commentators the decision, which became known for its particular application of New York's garnishment procedures as the "Koehler Remedy", virtually revolutionized the law of judgment collections in New York.
