Originally intent on becoming a surgeon, Ms. Scammon was held back from her dream due to finances. Subsequently, she earned a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, but the field of medicine kept calling her back. Over the years, she expanded upon her professional knowledge, earning an Associate of Science in Nursing, and passing her nursing boards in 1991, as well as a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Western Governors University. Ms. Scammon also dedicated herself to her country, serving in the United State Marine Corps. Backed by years of professional expertise, she excels today as a registered nurse at Duke Raleigh Hospital.
Driven to remain abreast of changes in the field, Ms. Scammon has been a certified operating room nurse (CNOR) as well as a CPR instructor for both her fellow medical workers, and the general public for the last 20 years. Similarly, she has maintained professional alignment with the Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses. Though her career has been filled with standout moments, Ms. Scammon takes the most pride in becoming a "default" preceptor due to her vast breadth of knowledge. She welcomes people into the operating room and is quickly able to help them feel comfortable in that setting.
The cornerstone of Ms. Scammon's overall success lies in the fact that she doesn't limit herself to working in the operating room. For instance, she took her place with her fellow nurses to help vaccinate against COVID-19 both in the hospital setting and with the general public. In the coming years, she intends to experience the continued growth and success of her career. Ultimately, Ms. Scammon aims to remain open to new opportunities and foster her enthusiasm for a variety of medical missions and volunteer work she is unable to participate in currently due to her work schedule.
