Previously, he worked as a distinguished member of the technical staff at Bellcore, where he worked between 1984 and 1991. During the early stages of his career, Dr. Heritage gained valuable expertise in the field with Bell Laboratories and as a postdoctoral fellow in the physics department at the Technical University of Munich.
Driven to remain abreast of changes in the field, Dr. Heritage aligns himself with the Photonics Society of IEEE, the American Physical Society, and OPTICA. Before embarking on his professional journey, he earned a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley. Subsequently, Dr. Heritage received a Master of Science in physics from San Diego State University in 1970 and a PhD in electrical engineering through his undergraduate alma mater.
In light of his professional achievements, Dr. Heritage earned the William Streiter Award through the IEEE Photonics Society, as well as The Wood Award through OPTICA, the Optical Society of America, and was elected to the National Academy of Engineering, which have been some of the highlights of his career. Though hard work and dedication have brought him far in his career, he attributes his success to his passion for physical phenomena and their applications.
