Dr. Knieter began his professional career at the ripe old age of fifteen when he joined Local 802 of the American Federation of Musicians which enabled him to work with the finest performers in the New York Metropolitan area. That success provided the financial bases which enabled him to complete a Bachelor of Science in music education in 1953 and a Master of Arts in music education with an emphasis in higher education in 1954 at New York University. Subsequently, after a successful audition, the Pentagon assigned him as teacher of advanced theory to the US Army Element at the Navel School of Music where wrote the theory program for the Warrant Officers course and co-authored a theory book between 1954 and 1956 in Anacostia, Washington, D.C.
Dr. Knieter began developing interdisciplinary arts courses in the West Hempstead, NY Schools between 1957 to 1962. A "Symposium in the Creative Arts" involved team-teaching with an art teacher, and the "Fine Arts in Historical Perspective" put him to be on loan to the history department. These creative curriculum innovations lead to his specialization as an interdisciplinarian in the arts. He completed his Doctor of Education degree at Teachers College, Columbia University in 1961.
Dr. Knieter traveled to San Jose State University in 1962 as assistant professor of music and education and inaugurated the ethnomusicology program teaching "Music in World Cultures." He was associate professor of music, assistant to the dean and acting dean at the Mary Pappert School of Music at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA. between 1965 and 1967. Leaving for Philadelphia, Dr. Knieter spent the next decade educating music teachers working on masters and doctoral degrees at Temple University's Boyer College of Music and Dance where he was professor and chair of the department of music education and music therapy and head of the doctoral program. During this period he published and lectured at universities and professional associations throughout the United States and Canada developing the field of Aesthetic Education which deals with the philosophical, psychological and educational foundations of interdisciplinary teaching and learning in the arts between 1967-1978.
Dr. Knieter became professor of music and dean of the College of Fine and Applied Arts at The University of Akron while simultaneously serving as adjunct professor of behavioral sciences at Northeast Ohio Universities College of Medicine where he taught sixth-year medical students "Psychology of the Arts" and physicians "Creativity in the Arts: Implications for Medical Practice" from 1978-1986.
Dr. Knieter returns to California in 1986 as professor of music and dean of the College of Fine Arts at California State University, Northridge. He subsequently returns to teaching research, ethnomusicology, and aesthetics. After a long and successful career in music education, the arts and academia that spanned more than 50 years, Dr. Knieter retires as professor emeritus of music at California State University, Northridge in 2006.
Dr. Knieter latest book, "Tonal Harmony for Professional Musicians" was completed in 2021, He co-edited "The Teaching Process and the Arts and Aesthetics" with Jane Stallings in 1979 and, served in a variety of editorial positions, authored peer-reviewed articles on art, education, psychology, philosophy and has been active on several editorial committees, including for the Journal of Research in Music Education. As a part of his ongoing professional commitments, Dr. Knieter has been affiliated with numerous organizations, including the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the American Association of Higher Education, the American Association of University Professors, and the Society for Ethnomusicology. He has also been active as a member and Tanglewood Symposium and a participant of the Music Educators National Conference (now National Association for Music Education), Additionally, Dr. Knieter has long been a member of the Kappa Phi Kappa and the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity of America.
In light of his professional accomplishments, Dr. Knieter has been listed in numerous professional publications, including the Dictionary of International Biography of the International Biographical Centre and NYU's Alum News. Furthermore, he was named to The Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels. Dr. Knieter attributes his accomplishments to the creative teachers that have inspired and influenced his career. Of all his achievements, however, Dr. Knieter is most proud to have been able to motivate his students to become teachers.
