For the past 30 years until her retirement, she focused her efforts on research into various cancers and how cancer cells interact with connective tissues. She has also published her own research in peer-reviewed journals. Additionally, she lent her expertise as a valued member to the American Association of Cancer Research.
Among her professional accomplishments, Dr. Starkey is proud to have received the Lawson, Wally, and Williams Prize from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in 1969. She was also honored with the Commonwealth Bureau of Animal Health Prize by the same institution.
Prior to her current role, Dr. Starkey served as a professor for Washington State University for 12 years. Prior to embarking on her professional journey, she earned a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Glasgow in Scotland. After immigrating to the United States in 1969, she attained a doctoral degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1972. Although her initial area of study focused on veterinary medicine, she took trainings in orthopedic pathology and conducted connective tissue research, leading into her work in cancer research through the interaction of cancer cells and connective tissue.
