BirthWise is particularly distinct in its point-of-view concerning birth as a "life process," not a medical process.
MATTHEWS, NC, March 23, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Toni Curtis CD(DONA), CCE, CVD(TVL), CHW, SpBCPE, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
For over 25 years, Toni Curtis has demonstrated empathy, expertise and excellence as a professional advocate and pillar of support for the maternal health community. In 2020, Toni founded, and currently serves as director of client services for BirthWise Doula Services LLC, a formal maternal support practice focused on improving birth outcomes for expectant mothers and families. This focus is made manifest through partnership with families on the entirety of their journey from family planning, pregnancy, labor and delivery, through postpartum care. In this regard, BirthWise is particularly distinct in its point-of-view concerning birth as a "life process," not a medical process - and while the process of birth may be "medically observed," it is vital to understand the importance of evidence-based, physiological birth practices (both modern and traditional) to afford mothers the opportunity to achieve safe natural childbirth, and limit unnecessary medical intervention.
Prior to her current role, Toni served as a corporate leader in training and education, business development and financial services positions, including several technology startups. Toni previously served as a Maternal Health Peer Educator for the Black Child & Family Institute, and currently serves as the chairperson for the "Black Mother & Baby" DEI committee and "I.M.P.A.C.T. Program" for DONA International.
While Toni is grateful for the tremendous opportunities and successes that she's experienced, she often cites that her success is "only due to the grace of God", and the discipline and work ethic that her father, a former ARMY Desert Storm veteran, instilled in her. As a military child, Toni attended lower grade education abroad, in an international school in Wurzburg, Germany - to which she attributes her ability to "see the world and its people through many different lenses, with empathy, curiosity and compassion." Her discipline, and desire to understand the world around her, evolved into an insatiable passion to learn. In 2006, Toni earned an Associate of Science in business, management, marketing from Sullivan University. She then obtained a Bachelor of Science in business administration, management and operations from the same institution in 2010. Toni now also holds numerous credentials and certifications, and as a subject matter expert, in many disciplines related to maternal healthcare, including Certified Childbirth Educator and Certified Birth Doula.
Drawing inspiration from her heritage as a descendent from a long line of black midwives, Toni intends to continue her groundbreaking work in bridging the gap of racial and socioeconomic disparities in the maternal healthcare system. Her family's historical involvement in various civil rights and social justice movements informed the foundations of her approach to invest, elevate and advocate for underrepresented and underserved communities. To this end, Toni intends to continue her mission of mentoring and equipping no less than 100 highly-educated doulas to go out and serve their local communities, providing much needed support to expecting mothers and families that would otherwise likely be underserved by their healthcare providers.
Toni's vision and oversight continue to steer BirthWise toward the intersection of pragmatic use of evidence-based, physiological birth practices, in conjunction with modern medical practices; the ultimate goals being: further improvement of birth outcomes, reducing friction between birthing communities and healthcare providers, and effectively addressing and reducing the impact of the maternal health crisis in the United States.
