An accomplished journalist, Ms. Reaves retired from her full-time career endeavors with The Post and Courier in Charleston, South Carolina, after more than 35 years with the publisher. She began her professional journey with the organization in 1968 and served as a reporter and copy editor until 2004. Ms. Reaves simultaneously served as a reporter for the Evening Post Publishing Company in Charleston from 1968 to 1981 and as the assistant chief copy editor between 1981 and 1991. Furthermore, Ms. Reaves had the opportunity to serve as the copy desk chief in 1981. As chief, she was responsible for selecting every story published in the newspaper five days per week.
Throughout her professional career, Ms. Reaves became an expert in writing grants for nonprofit organizations, writing detailed and heartfelt obituaries, and, among other tasks, was very proficient at catching errors before they went to print. As a journalist, she also learned the importance of getting both sides of the story. During her interviews, she always kept eye contact with individuals to decipher if they were being truthful. Ms. Reaves attributes much of what she learned in the industry to several wonderful mentors.
Civically active, Ms. Reaves is a member of HELP of Summerville in Summerville, South Carolina, a volunteer nonprofit organization that assists needy individuals and families in need. She previously served as the executive director for Sculpture in the South in Summerville, a nonprofit devoted to promoting an appreciation for sculptures through education.
Ms. Reaves studied at Winthrop College, earning a Bachelor of Arts in English in 1968. To remain aware of developments in the industry, she has been a member of the Society of Professional Journalists. Ms. Reaves has also served as the president and vice president of the Charleston Press Club.
In recognition of her writing contributions, Ms. Reaves received the Second Place Spot Reporting Award from the South Carolina Associated Press in 1972. She also received the School Bell Award from the South Carolina Educational Association in 1973. Additionally, Ms. Reaves was recognized with an Order of The Flying Orchid Award from Delta Airlines in 1978.
