Since 2003, he has built a prolific career as a mathematics teacher for the New York City Department of Education, while concurrently serving as an adjunct graduate professor at the Lyceum of the Philippines University as of 2021. Prior to this role, he served as a mathematics lecturer at Campus Magnet High School. Dr. Cuerquez initially began his vocation working as an assistant marketing manager and a technical liaison officer at Camella Homes from 1993 to 1995.
Between 1995 and 2003, Dr. Cuerquez continued his career as a mathematics and physics teacher at San Juan National High School. During this time, he was also active as an adjunct mathematics instructor at St Rita's College from 1999 to 2002, and as a high school principal at the San Juan National High School from 1999 until 2003. Following this post, he excelled as an adjunct mathematics instructor at Daemen University between 2006 and 2007, and as a mathematics lecturer at the Thurgood Marshall Academy in 2007. Subsequently, Dr. Cuerquez contributed to Adelphia University, where he taught as an adjunct college mathematics instructor from 2007 to 2009.
Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Cuerquez pursued an education at the Central Mindanao University in the Philippines, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics in 1993 cum laude, followed by a Master of Science in Physics and Mathematics from Xavier University in 1996. He continued his academic efforts at the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines, earning a Master of Science in Applied Mathematical Sciences in 1999 and a Doctor of Philosophy in Applied Mathematical Sciences in 2003. Subsequently, Dr. Cuerquez proceeded with his scholarly endeavors at the Polytechnic Institute of the New York University Tandon School of Engineering, attaining a Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics in 2006, followed by a Doctor of Philosophy in Management specialized in education from Lyceum of the Philippines University in 2020.
As a commitment to his field, Dr. Cuerquez has been active with several industry-related organizations, including the Association of Filipino Teachers and Educators in America Inc., the American Mathematical Society, the National Education Association, the United Federation of Teachers, and the New York State United Teachers union. Likewise dedicated to civic advocacy, he contributes to the homeless community and advocates for better education for students with disabilities.
Well-regarded for his contributions to the field, Dr. Cuerquez has received multiple awards, including a Leadership Award and an Academic Excellence Award from the Lyceum of the Philippines University, a Filipino International Teaching Service Award and the Most Influential Teacher award, to only name a few. Among his professional accomplishments, he is most proud of his ability to properly educate his students of all mathematical concepts and equip them with the confidence to utilize their knowledge of math effectively. Reflecting on his career, he attributes much of his success to his dedication to his specialty and passion for helping people advance educationally.
