Drawing on over four decades of expertise, Mr. Zuchman has focused his professional life around the empowerment of inner city youth and families. Since 1987, he has built a prolific career as the Executive Director of SCAN-Harbor. In addition to his primary vocation, he has found much success as an adjunct associate professor at the Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership at The City College of New York as of 2014. Moreover, Mr. Zuchman serves as a Civil Rights spokesperson for the Facing History and Ourselves organization since 2012.
In 1967, Mr. Zuchman began his career as a youth worker at the Casita Maria Center for Arts and Education. He went on to garner expertise as an Associate Executive Director for the Edwin Gould Services for Children and Families, while serving as a consultant for the Puerto Rico Organization for Research, Education and Self Sufficiency. In his career-related endeavors, he has excelled as the founder, president and current chair of the Human Service Consortium of East Harlem Inc. since 1979. Additionally, Mr. Zuchman has authored numerous books, documentaries and articles in various professional journals addressing the needs of inner-city African American and Latino youth and families.
Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Mr. Zuchman pursued an education at The City College of New York, where he obtained a Bachelor's degree in Sociology in 1967. He continued his academic efforts at the Columbia University School of Social Work, obtaining a Master of Social Work in 1974, as well as, earning academic distinction as Commencement Speaker Class of 1974. Long dedicated to civic advocacy, Mr. Zuchman has served on the Board of various organizations, including United Way, the Bridgeport Congress of Racial Equality, NYPD Commissioner Bratton's Youth Engineering Task Force and the Mount Sinai Hospital Center for Community and Academic Research, among others.
Well-regarded for his achievements in the field, Mr. Zuchman has received multiple awards, including the Herbert and Sylvia Woods' Community Service Award, a Certificate of Appreciation from the Manhattan Community Board 11, as well as, New York City Council, and, New York State Legislative Resolution Commendations, to only name a few. Among his professional accomplishments, he is most proud of his service as one of the original 1961 Freedom Riders and for his significant contributions to the Civil Rights movement as recognized in books such as, "Breach of Peace" and "The Freedom Riders." Mr. Zuchman's current professional focus centers upon empowering inner-city youth, amidst oppressive socio-economic disparities. Mr. Zuchman is most proud of SCAN-Harbor's status as the largest youth service provider in the challenged communities of East Harlem, Harlem, and the South Bronx. SCAN-Harbor's current Board Chair, Jamel Oeser-Sweat, was a youth participant with SCAN as a ten year old. His current status as Board Chair speaks to SCAN-Harbor's successful emphasis upon community empowerment.
