Since 1995, he has built a prolific career at Miami-Dade County Corrections, where he advanced through the ranks and served first as a correctional captain and a division chief of the rehabilitation department, and most recently as an assistant director. In this capacity, he is responsible for supervising the facility staff and managing over 4,500 inmates in custody. In addition to his primary vocation, he is active as an auditor for the American Correctional Association as of 2006. Dr. Johnson initially began his career serving as a first-class airman for the United States Air Force for seven years.
Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Johnson pursued an education at Barry University, where he obtained a bachelor's degree in public administration in 2003, followed by a Master of Business Administration in crisis and emergency management from Florida Atlantic University in 2004. He continued his academic efforts at Capella University, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in public safety leadership in 2020. As a commitment to his field, Dr. Johnson has been certified in emotional intelligence for leaders via the Harvard Business School, in executive leadership by the Florida International University Chapman Graduate School of Business, as a public manager via Florida State University and as a jail manager by the American Jail Association.
To remain aware of developments affecting his field, Dr. Johnson has been active with several industry-related organizations, including the National Institute of Justice, the National Institute of Corrections, the American Jail Association, the American Correctional Association, the South Florida Chapter of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives and the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. Likewise dedicated to civic advocacy, he contributes to the Just Detention International foundation. Additionally, Dr. Johnson has served as a speaker and a contributor to the American Jail Association and at Capitol Hill when advocating for the Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003, gender-related issues, mental health crises and trauma-informed care for inmates.
Well-regarded for his contributions to the field, Dr. Johnson has received multiple awards, including the Shining Star Award and the President's Award from the American Jail Association. Among his professional accomplishments, he is most proud of his involvement and initiatives with Just Detention International, an advocacy group that eradicates sexual assault in all forms of detention. Additionally, he is gratified to have amplified the voices of individuals who were not in the position to speak up for themselves. Looking toward the future, Dr. Johnson aspires to successfully retire and hopes to serve as a consultant for the prison system, where he intends to continue advocating for the incarcerated community.
