Leveraging more than four decades of excellence in social work and behavioral health services, Ms. Sams has earned distinction as a health resource navigator with Easterseals Florida, Inc. Since 2022, she has focused her efforts on helping to provide services to individuals with disabilities. Among her professional accomplishments, she is proud to have been appointed to the Board of Social Work licensure for Tennessee, serving from 2007 to 2014.
Prior to her current role, Ms. Sams began her career as a social worker for a community placement program at Frontier Health in 1978 and was a therapist with their children and youth program from 1979 to 1984. Following this time, she served as a social worker with Mountain States Health Alliance from 1984 until 1995. During this time, she was also a therapist, independent contractor, consultant and clinical social worker for a private practice from 1991 until 1996. She subsequently functioned as an employee assistant program provider for Levi-Strauss and Co. until 2000 and was an adjunct faculty member for the social work department at East Tennessee State University from 1998 until 2002.
Ms. Sams continued her career as a contract social worker with NHC Home Care in 2000 until 2009 and was a social worker with Bethany Christian Services from 2001 until returning to Mountain States Health Alliance as a medical social worker in 2005. She was promoted in 2006 to Outpatient Therapist for behavioral health services and worked in this role until taking a role as a social worker and care coordinator with BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee in 2009. She subsequently served as an intensive outpatient program therapist for geriatric behavioral health with Pioneer Health Services in 2011. She became a clinical social worker with the United States Department of Veterans Affairs in 2012, earning a promotion to a senior social worker in 2017 and retiring from the role in 2020.
Prior to embarking on her professional journey, Ms. Sams earned a Bachelor of Science in Social Work from the University of Alabama in 1976. Following this achievement, she attained a Master of Social Work in clinical social work from the same institution in 1978. A natural-born helper, she considers herself inclined to healing people and is continuing her work in a part-time capacity.
