Leveraging more than three decades of excellence in cultural anthropology, Dr. Towns has earned distinction as a mediator and cross-cultural consultant for COPE. Since 1995, she has focused her efforts on consulting on cross-cultural issues with the goal of helping others and lifting up marginalized individuals. She was admitted as a Fellow in the Society for Applied Anthropology in recognition of her stellar work.
Prior to her current role, Dr. Towns served as both educator and attorney-at-law in the Bahamas where she taught Spanish before serving as Education Officer in the Bahamian Ministry of Education and introducing guidance and counseling to their public school system. In 1974, she launched a career in law and practiced in the Bahamas until moving to the United States and pursuing a degree in anthropology. From 1995 to 2002, she served as qualitative researcher for Howard University's Center for Research on the Education of Students Placed at Risk (CRESPAR). Subsequently, she served as a legislative aide in Maryland's State Senate.
Also a dedicated civil advocate, Dr. Towns is a participant in Christians Reaching Out in Service (CROS), the League of Women Voters, The Southern Poverty Law Center, The American Civil Liberties Union, The National Urban League and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).
Prior to embarking on her professional journey, Dr. Towns earned a Bachelor of Arts in Modern Foreign Languages from Fisk University in 1958, (where she was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa); a Master of Arts in Education and Spanish from Northwestern University in 1961 and a Law Degree from the Supreme Court of the Bahamas in 1974. She subsequently gained a Master's Degree in anthropology in 1988 and a Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Cultural Anthropology in 1995, both from The American University in Washington, D.C. Within the coming years, Dr. Towns intends to continue her work of connecting people regarding cross-cultural issues.
