Judge Marrus, retired from the bench after serving more than 30 years as an Acting Supreme Court Justice in Kings County of New York State. He was originally appointed to the bench by former Mayor Edward Koch in 1983, and reappointed by former Mayors David Dinkins in 1993 and Michael Bloomberg in 2002. During his tenure, he presided over more than 650 criminal trials including some of the most serious and notorious felony cases in Brooklyn.
In recognition of his outstanding body of work, he was named one of the Best Judges in New York on three separate occasions. Judge Marrus was a frequent lecturer at judicial and attorney seminars, hosted "Law Talk New York," a public service television show for the New York State Bar Association, and mentored dozens of newly elected and appointed judges. The judge was invited to appear as a consultant in the Netflix documentary series "Who Killed Malcolm X" and in a documentary for the Oxygen Network television series "Mark of A Killer" about a serial murderer over whose trial Judge Marrus presided.
Upon retirement, Judge Marrus now officiates weddings through Judges For Love, Inc., a business he and his wife Iris created to enable couples to engage a judge to perform their marriage ceremonies wherever the weddings will take place. Judges For Love, Inc. has been recognized as a unique and outstanding wedding officiant business in articles published by The New York Times and the New York Daily News. Judge Marrus has twice officiated wedding ceremonies on the ABC television show "Good Morning America."
Prior to his judicial service, Alan Marrus was Chief of the Appeals Bureau of the Bronx County District Attorney's Office. He began his legal career as an Assistant District Attorney for the Kings County Office of the District Attorney.
Outside of his professional career, Alan Marrus' quick wit and sense of humor has been showcased at numerous comedy clubs where he has performed as Master of Ceremonies at a comedy show at the renowned Friars Club in New York City, and in several comedic videos he and his wife Iris produced to entertain judges at their conventions.
His passion for guiding young people to become productive members of society led Judge Marrus to spend years working with children in his capacity as Commissioner of The Brooklyn Indoor Soccer League for New York City high school players and as Coach for the American Youth Soccer Organization.
He is a proud veteran of the United States Army Reserve, a graduate of George Washington University Law School and of Brooklyn College of the City University of New York.
