Drawing on over three decades of expertise in the field of academia, Dr. Thomas specializes in adult and early childhood education. Since 2022, he has found much success as a professor at Fielding Graduate University, while concurrently serving as a contributing faculty member at Walden University as of 2012. In this capacity, Dr. Thomas is responsible for developing qualitative methods and research in education, serving on university and department committees, mentoring graduate students, creating coursework and teaching online classes.
Dr. Thomas initially began his vocation serving as associate director of Project Eagle Early Head Start from 1990 to 1999 and then as a program specialist at the Administration for Children and Families Federal Region VII Office of Head Start from 1999 to 2003. Following this post, he was active as an associate professor at Saint Xavier University, where he worked from 2003 until 2018. Between 2018 and 2020, he garnered expertise as a regional field specialist at Zero to Three. He then excelled as an interim associate dean and licensure officer at the American International College in 2021. In his career related endeavors, Dr. Thomas has presented at national conferences, authored two books and numerous peer-reviewed journal articles, and contributed book chapters to major research publications in the field of education.
Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Thomas pursued an education at the University of Missouri, where he obtained a bachelor's degree in psychology and sociology in 1981, followed by a Master of Arts in adult and continuing education administration in 1985. He continued his academic efforts at Kansas State University, earning a Doctor of Education in adult and continuing education in 1995. As a commitment to his field, he has been active with several industry-related organizations, including the National Association for the Education of Young Children and the American Association for Adult and Continuing Education. Likewise dedicated to civic advocacy, Dr. Thomas contributes to the Parenting for Nonviolence foundation.
Well-regarded for his contributions to the field, Dr. Thomas has received the Partners in Quality Award and has been recognized as a Marquis Who's Who Among America's Teachers. Among his professional accomplishments, he is most proud of his work as an associate director for the early childhood education program called Project Eagle at the University of Kansas Medical Center, where he created a model for the National Early Head Start Program that is currently utilized nationally. Reflecting on a long career, he attributes much of his success to the mentorship of an exceptional leader, Martha Staker, at the University of Kansas, who shaped the trajectory of his vocational path.
