Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Drawing on over two decades of expertise, Dr. Lee specializes in radiation oncology data science, computational medical physics, and biomedical imaging informatics. Since 2019, he has found much success at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, where he first served as a faculty research associate, and later advanced to the post of a senior research investigator for the department of radiation oncology. Prior to this role, Dr. Lee was active as a postdoctoral research fellow at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine from 2017 until 2019.
Dr. Lee initially began his career as a researcher at the Research Institute of Radiological Science in Yonsei University College of Medicine, Seoul, Korea from 2002 to 2004, while pursuing his master's degree. Following this post, he was active as a research associate at the Institute of Radiation Medicine in Seoul National University Medical Research Center from 2005 to 2011, while pursuing his PhD degree. Between 2011 and 2019, he garnered expertise as a postdoctoral research fellow first at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School in radiology from 2011 to 2015, then at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in medical physics from 2015 to 2017, and finally at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in radiation oncology and molecular radiation sciences from 2017 to 2019. In his career related endeavors, Dr. Lee has authored and co-authored such works as, "Interpretable Machine Learning for Predicting Pathologic Complete Response in Patients Treated with Chemoradiation Therapy for Rectal Adenocarcinoma," in Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence (2022), "Radiotherapy Standardization and Artificial Intelligence within the National Cancer Institute's Clinical Trials Network" published in Clinical Oncology (2022), "Multi-block Discriminant Analysis of Integrative 18F-FDG-PET/CT Radiomics for Predicting Circulating Tumor Cells in Early Stage Non-small Cell Lung Cancer Treated with Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy" in the International Journal of Radiation Oncology, Biology, Physics (2021), and more.
Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Lee pursued an education at Korea University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Engineering in Applied Electronics in 2002, followed by a Master of Medical Science from the Division of Medical Sciences in the graduate school of Yonsei University in 2004. He continued his academic efforts at Seoul National University, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in Medical Science from the graduate school of Interdisciplinary Program in Radiation Applied Life Science in 2011. As a commitment to his field, he has been certified in Artificial Intelligence from the Carnegie Mellon University School of Computer Science, Machine Learning and Health Track at Oxford Machine Learning Summer School 2022, Data Science and Machine Learning: Making Data-driven Decisions from MIT Institute for Data, Systems, and Society at the MIT Schwarzman College of Computing, among others. Additionally, he has been enrolled in the Master of Science in Engineering in Data Science program at the University of Pennsylvania since 2023. He is currently pursuing this degree at Penn Engineering while working at Penn Medicine. Moreover, Dr. Lee has been active with several professional organizations, including the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) and the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM), among others. Currently, he is an associate editor of medical physics at AAPM, an associate member at ASTRO, and a staff member at NRG Oncology.
Well-regarded for his achievements in the field, Dr. Lee has received multiple awards, including the Publication Award in Medical Physics from NRG Oncology in 2023, the Jack Krohmer Early-Career Investigator Award from the AAPM in 2021, the MC2 Best Paper Award from the Korean Association of Medical Physicists in North America in 2021 and 2020, Science Council Abstract Winner Award from AAPM in 2020, and Basic/Translational Science Abstract Award in Radiation Physics from ASTRO in 2017 to only name a few of his many honors. Among his professional accomplishments, he is most proud of publishing a paper in the Medical Physics journal in 2010, related to his PhD dissertation, titled "Multilevel Analysis of Spatiotemporal Association Features for Differentiation of Tumor Enhancement Patterns in Breast DCE-MRI." This paper was later chosen by the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) as the best paper for their 2011 Yearbook of Medical Informatics. Reflecting on his career, he attributes much of his success to his pioneering effective computational image-based analyses in the field of radiology and radiation oncology for risk assessment, diagnosis, prognosis, and response to therapy, resulting in various translated components in the field. Looking toward the future, Dr. Lee aspires to expand the scope of his contributions to his specialty by utilizing artificial intelligence to establish better standards in clinical trials.
