Mr. Romain is an established attorney and civil rights activist who was named as the chief executive officer of the Charlotte Center for Legal Advocacy in 2022. In his role, Mr. Romain primarily focuses on ensuring that everyone in the community is treated equally and fairly. He also oversees a team of attorneys that all contribute to the mission of the Center.
Established in 1967, the Charlotte Center for Legal Advocacy is notably a nonprofit organization comprised of a team of skilled lawyers that provide comprehensive, pro bono legal services to the region's low-income residents. Serving more than 5,000 residents annually, The Charlotte Center is recognized as the largest provider of legal assistance in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, and the largest nonprofit representing immigration cases in North and South Carolina.
Having spent more than a decade in a similar capacity, Mr. Romain advocated and defended indigent individuals as an assistant public defender for Mecklenburg County. He subsequently served an additional three years as the deputy general counsel for Appalachian State University.
Among his other professional endeavors, Mr. Romain has found success as a professor at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, teaching Criminal Procedure and several advanced undergraduate courses. He has also overseen various legal trainings and was a national speaker on systematic racism, criminal justice reform, and other relevant topics. Prior to earning his law degree, Mr. Romain was affiliated with the National Institute of Justice and worked for several prosecutors, judges, law firms, and U.S. Senator John Edwards.
Initially inspired to pursue a career in law to help heal the many injustices faced in society, particularly after the 1991 Rodney King verdict, Mr. Romain is passionate about building community programs and projects that make a difference. He has participated in community programming with the city's most prominent philanthropic group and has been active with the local Young Men's Christian Association. Mr. Romain has also traveled throughout the U.S. as a social justice advocate and speaker, having spoken at events like the 2020 Black Lives Matter protest in Boone, North Carolina, and engaging in live television interviews about his advocacy work. Moreover, Mr. Romain has been affiliated with the United Way and the United Neighborhood Organization.
Mr. Romain graduated with a bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He was notably a D1 track and field runner during his undergraduate years. Mr. Romain subsequently earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence at a local law school in Virginia in 2007. To remain aware of developments in his field, he is a professional member of the North Carolina Advocates for Justice.
