Drawing on over three decades of diverse expertise, Ms. Hicks specializes in business, data science, strategy, and analytics. Since 2018, she has found much success as a data strategist and scientist at the International Association of Privacy Professionals. In this capacity, she is responsible for business intelligence, data privacy operations, data governance, supporting strategic initiatives and leading the IAPP Data team. In addition to her primary vocation, Ms. Hicks serves as an adjunct faculty professor and a curriculum advisory board member at Southern New Hampshire University as of 2022.
Ms. Hicks initially began her career working in the hospitality industry from 1991 to 2016. Between 2010 and 2016, she garnered expertise as the owner and chief operating officer of KMA Group Inc., and as the owner, franchisee, and a general manager of a pizza delivery restaurant in Southport, NC. During this time, while owning and operating her franchise, her business contributed to the local elementary schools, held multiple fundraisers for the public schools in her community, sponsored high school students for specialized summer camps, and was awarded Brunswick County, NC, Business of the Year for philanthropy in 2014. Ms. Hicks was also an active supporter of Waves4Kids, a not-for-profit organization in Brunswick County, NC whose mission is to support children under the care of Social Services in Brunswick County. Following the sale of her business in 2015 to the parent corporation after 5 years of continuous success, she relocated to New Hampshire where she worked as a business and management consultant for The Maine Thing LLC from 2016 until 2018, in Maine and New Hampshire. During this time, she was also active as a data scientist consultant at Martin's Point Health Care, while concurrently serving as a team lead data scientist consultant at the University of New Hampshire Institute on Disability from 2017 to 2018. Moreover, Ms. Hicks contributed to Market Intelligence International Ltd as a senior customer insight manager in 2018.
Prior to embarking on her professional journey, Ms. Hicks pursued an education at Berea College, in Berea, KY where she obtained a bachelor's degree in history in 1993. As a proud 7th-generation Kentuckian, her family has a long history with Berea College as her grandparents also attended Berea in the late 1920's. She continued her academic success at the University of New Hampshire, earning a Master of Science in Analytics & Data Science in 2018. As a commitment to her field, she has been active with several industry-related organizations, including Women in Data, Privacy and Data Security, DAMA International, and The Enterprise Big Data Framework Alliance. As part of her involvement with the Enterprise Big Data Framework Alliance, Ms. Hicks is presenting at Big Data Days 2023, a virtual data conference, May 23-24, 2023, where she will present 'Organizational Culture Transformation: Challenges and Benefits of Adopting a Data Culture.' Likewise dedicated to civic advocacy and philanthropy, Ms. Hicks contributes to Heifer International, the Trevor Project and to several local charities such as food banks in her community. She further continues to support her alma mater, Berea College, giving back to her educational and Kentucky roots.
Well-regarded for her contributions to the field, Ms. Hicks was nominated for the Small Franchisee of the Year in the Southeast Region and the Small Franchisee General Manager of the Year in the Southeast Region in 2013. Among her professional accomplishments, she is most proud of opening and managing a small business where she was involved in writing a business plan and a proposal to secure funding for the franchise, as well as managing the construction and the human resources aspects of the company. One of her proudest moments as a new business owner was creating 30 new jobs in an economically challenged area. While she sold her franchise to the parent corporation in 2015, the location is still in successful operation and provides needed employment opportunities to the community. Additionally, she is gratified to have ventured into the data science industry. Reflecting on her achievements, she attributes much of her success to her dedication and lifelong pursuit of knowledge, and to her desire to be a good steward of her community by supporting local organizations and charities. Ms. Hicks is currently pursuing her doctorate degree in Business Administration - Organizational Development at Johnson & Wales University while she expands the scope of her career.
