Leveraging more than three decades of excellence in musicology, filmmaking and African studies, Dr. Gunderson has earned distinction as a professor of musicology with Florida State University. Since 2003, he has focused his efforts on teaching courses that intersect with sonic repatriation, African history, musical labor and other areas of ethnomusicology. Additionally, he is a valued member of the African Studies Association and the Anthropological Association.
Prior to starting his private career, Dr. Gunderson served honorably as a sergeant with the United States Air Force. Following his military service, he was inspired to utilize his veteran's benefits to pursue his education as well as continue to travel the world. He fortunately had the opportunity to travel to a village in Kenya to teach high school students, leading him to pursue African studies and ethnomusicology.
Over the course of his career, Dr. Gunderson has received awards from the National Endowment for the Humanities, Fulbright-Hays and the Wenner-Gren Foundation to support his stellar work. He has contributed a wealth of research to the field, totaling in over fifty articles and reviews in the journals Ethnomusicology, Africa Today and History and Anthropology, among others. He has lent his expertise as a general editor for the academic journal Ethnomusicology and is the co-founder and editor in chief for the Journal of Audiovisual Ethnomusicology.
Outside of his primary career efforts, Dr. Gunderson is an accomplished documentary filmmaker, having won several awards for his work. He collaborated with musician Travis Roberts for his 2012 film "Human Skab," co-directed with Bret Woods. Most recently, he created a film about a Tanzanian drum-maker, "Ng'oma: The Work of Our Clan," which was shown in numerous international film festivals in 2020.
Embarking on his scholarly journey, Dr. Gunderson earned a Bachelor of Arts in music performance from The Evergreen State College in 1987. Following this achievement, he attained a Master of Arts in musicology and ethnomusicology in 1991 and a Doctor of Philosophy in ethnomusicology in 1999, both from Wesleyan University. Within the coming years, Dr. Gunderson intends to continue his work while focusing more of his efforts on mentoring, particularly for African students, providing them greater representation.
