EAGLE RIVER, AK, April 19, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Phillip John "Aarnaquq" Charette has been included in Marquis Who's Who. Leveraging nearly four decades of excellence in educational leadership, professional artistry and civil advocacy, Mr. Charette has earned distinction as an Elders and Youth Conference presenter in Fairbanks and Anchorage, member of numerous planning committees, and volunteer with many Alaska Native Education programs. Since 2015, he has focused his efforts on serving in an administrative capacity, having utilized his artistic skills to contribute in the design of a building and classrooms as a traditional ceremonial house, striving to reflect an Indigenous perspective in the architecture. Additionally, he is a cultural resource, presenter and cultural guide for the UAF Elder Hostel, lead artist for the community art project for the Alaska Native Heritage Center and a supervisor for the RAHI student volunteers for community garden work with Calypso Farms Community Gardens. He also lends his expertise as a stage presenter and welcome speaker for the Festival of Native Arts.
Prior to his current role, Mr. Charette began his career as a community advisory board member with the North Star Center of the Allvest Rehabilitative Services and then with the Institute of Alaska Native Arts in 1992. Following this time, he served as a field research volunteer with the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries in Baker City in 1998. During this time, he was also a gallery, ceramic art studio and Native American flute circle volunteer with the Carnegie Crossroads Regional Art Center from 1998 until 2012. He also served as a diverse arts judge and official with the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts in 2007 and was a board chair for the Carnegie Crossroads Regional Community Art Center in 2008. In 2015, Mr. Charette presented to the Joint Ocean Commission Initiative (JOCI) established by Congress at UAF as a University Representative providing an overview of the College of Rural and Community Development and the Status of Alaska Native peoples and lifeways to the JOCI main body. As a result, Mr. Charette advised key officials on how to capitalize on a culturally appropriate approaches and perspective enhancing experiences for visiting U.S. dignitaries to Alaska.
Among his professional accomplishments, Mr. Charette is proud to have received a Standards Award in Diverse Arts from the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts in 2004 and had his "Moonlight Spirit" mask accessioned into a permanent collection of the Coos Art Museum the same year. He has had various prints and artwork accessioned by the Hallie Ford Museum, the Burke Museum, the French National Museum, the Ford Foundation and the Native American Art Council of the Portland Art Museum. Additionally, he received awards from the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts, the Longhouse Education and Cultural Center, the Just Plain Folks Music Awards and the Alaska Native Heritage Center, among others.
Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Mr. Charette earned a Bachelor of Arts in Alaska Native and a Bachelor of Education in secondary education and teaching from the University of Alaska, both in 1990. Following this achievement, he attained a Master of Education in administration, planning and social policy from the Harvard University Graduate School of Education in 1994. Well-qualified in his field, he holds teaching certifications in the State of Oregon and the State of Alaska.
Within the coming years, Mr. Charette intends to expand indigenous knowledge as an important part of life. His goal is to help humanity improve its impact on the planet, utilizing an understanding of indigenous cultures and "Ways of Being" to foster global sustainability as a method to preserve life well into the future for all life that depend on it.
