Maynard Aris endowed professor in economics and management at Albion College, having been appointed to the prestigious role in 2021 and where she has since prioritized faculty and leadership development and the delivery of course content across platforms that include management, leadership development, human resources and organizational behavior. Dr. Baker also served a concurrent position as an instructor at Penn State World Campus, where she joined the faculty in 2011.
Dr. Baker boasts unsurpassed academic accomplishments including a Bachelor of Science in safety sciences, with minors in applied statistics and Spanish, completed at Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1999. She also finished a Master of Business Administration with an emphasis in management from Clarion University of Pennsylvania, also known as PennWest Clarion, after which she continued the avid pursuit of higher education by earning a Master of Science in management and organization from Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Baker ultimately completed a terminal degree at the same institution in 2007, and with the PhD in higher education in hand, she went on to accumulate vital industry credentials, including a certificate in human resource management from Villanova University and the Senior Certified Professional designation from the Society for Human Resource Management in 2022.
Through her work, Dr. Baker has sustained a family legacy of active educators and brings applied classroom experience as well as administrative success to her current roles: She was an administrator at Harvard Business School's Executive Education Division from 2001 to 2003, joining Albion College as an assistant professor in 2007. She earned promotion and tenure in 2012 and full professorship in 2016. During this time, Dr. Baker also served as an adjunct at Spring Arbor University and Michigan State University in their graduate programs in business and higher education, respectively.
With numerous research contributions to her credit, Dr. Baker has proudly contributed to the ongoing scholarly conversation surrounding the active field of faculty development and the phenomenon of faculty managing the mid-career milestone. Distinct titles attributed to her include books such as "Developing Faculty in Liberal Arts Colleges" and "Charting Your Path to Full: A Guide for Women Associate Professors." She also capably edited "Success After Tenure: Supporting Mid-Carer Faculty," a compilation of curated essays by noteworthy experts writing in the arena of professional development for post-tenure professors.
Other distinguished titles by Dr. Baker include "Bridging the Research-Practice Nexus: Resources, Tools, and Strategies to Navigate Mid-Career in the Academy," disseminated by Wiley; "Managing Your Academic Career: A Guide to Re-envision Mid-Career," disseminated by Routledge. Her most recent contracted book, an edited volume, "Building Your Academic Mid-Career Toolkit: Cultivating Career Advancement," will be disseminated by Routledge. Dr. Baker is an editorial board member for the esteemed Journal of Higher Education.
Dr. Baker has proudly accepted numerous awards for her academic and professional achievements, including being named a Top 100 Visionary in Education by the Global Forum for Education and Learning in 2021. The Michigan College of Alliance named her Professor of the Day, and she was recognized as an American Council on Education Fellow for the 2023 to 2024 year, which Dr. Baker cites as one of her most notable professional achievements thus far. Dr. Baker also served as a Fulbright Specialist in 2020 hosted by Utrecht University and University College Utrecht.
Dr. Baker attributes her success to the deliberate pursuit of productive projects that make a difference for others. Looking toward the future, she will prepare for and identify an appropriate leadership role in the space of faculty and academic staff development, relying in part on her accumulated administrative experience at Albion College and consulting work in faculty and leadership development across the academy through her consulting company Lead Mentor Develop, LLC. Moreover, Dr. Baker will continue to partner with and coach faculty members toward the successful acquisition of the culminating rank of full professor.
