Mr. Nichols is distinguished for nearly 15 years of dedication to the architecture field. As Owner of MNichols Design, he possesses expert-level knowledge of high-end residential architecture, including single-family and multi-family project types. As an Architect and Owner, he juggles both business administration and design roles with his day-to-day tasks involving bookkeeping, maintaining licenses, overseeing advertising and business development in addition to his primary task of creating great designs and bringing them to life through close collaboration with diverse project teams. Mr. Nichols's impressive work has gained prominent recognition; Maxable chose one of his ADUs as one of the 2022 Top Ten Accessory Dwelling Units in Los Angeles, he has been featured in LA Weekly as an "Up-and-Coming Architect and Entrepreneur," as well as in an episode of Destination LA where he was interviewed as a recommended local LA Architect. Lastly, he worked on the Design Build Team at Real Architecture Workshop for a project in Oaxaca, Mexico called "El Mirador," which was the recipient of an American Institute of Architects (AIA), Minneapolis Chapter, Merit Award in 2012.
Before starting his own architecture practice in 2019, Mr. Nichols held positions at KAA Design Group and LARGE Architecture in Los Angeles, as well as at Baylis Architects in Washington State prior to moving to LA. Mark Nichols has also served in other roles while developing his career as an Architect: He provided essential design software education as an Adjunct Instructor for the next generation of architects at two technical colleges in Washington: Lake Washington Institute of Technology and Sanford-Brown College. He also volunteers his time and expertise as a Project Lead for Architects Without Borders – Seattle Chapter (AWB-S). He has worked on site master plan projects in Haiti and Kenya and is currently working alongside AWB-S and HEDAC (an educational assistance non-profit in Honduras) for the site master plan of a large vocational center in Morazán, Honduras.
Mr. Nichols's fascination with architecture emerged during his childhood; he loved playing with blocks as well as sketching and later began cultivating his drafting skills at an early age while in high school. Prior to embarking on his professional journey, he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Politics, with a minor in Spanish, from Whitman College in 2007. Despite majoring in politics with a potential path towards law school, he resolved to pursue his architectural passion by taking an Introduction to Architecture Summer Course after graduating from Whitman. Inspired to continue his studies in the field, he went on to earn his Master's degree in Architecture from the University of Oregon with a focus on Sustainable Design.
While Mr. Nichols's career has been filled with memorable moments, he is especially proud of his design for an addiction treatment center called Visions Malibu – a recovery retreat run by Visions Adolescent Treatment Centers. Located in Malibu, the project features an administrative office space with classrooms as well as a multipurpose barn designed for community gatherings and social events. His thoughtful design provides an inspiring space to help people on their path to recovery. In this project and in all his work, Mr. Nichols credits his success to clear communication with the Client, a desire to understand the needs of those that will be the end-users of his designs, a love for the technology used to illustrate design concepts, and the unending commitment to tying all these together to create well-crafted and beautiful architecture.
Mr. Nichols holds a LEED AP BD+C Certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional in Building Design and Construction) from the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) in addition to being a licensed Architect in the states of Washington and California.
