He proudly accumulated practical experience through an extended plumbing and heating apprenticeship in the United Kingdom, after which he deployed that expertise by working for general contractors in Australia. He also pursued a one-year assignment as a submariner plumber with the Royal Australian Navy before helping GlaxoSmithKline build a research and development plant in 1991; Dr. Pavitt proudly notes that was the second-largest construction project in Europe at the time, and once promoted to superintendent, he began to explore the discourse surrounding safety management protocols.
Dr. Pavitt's deep industry experience and refined mentorship abilities prompted an opportunity to join the faculty at Loughborough University as a senior researcher and associate professor. From 1998 to 2004, he thrived on mentoring motivated students as they pursued higher education and professional advancement while he simultaneously studied toward a terminal degree in his field; in retrospect, Dr. Pavitt ranks the rewarding work of educating undergraduate and graduate students in construction technology on par with delivering safety consulting services for leading firms like Microsoft.
In 2006, Dr. Pavitt was drawn back to industry work, gaining broad experience through a series of essential positions, Notably, he was a project manager with Environmental Resources Management through 2009, then in 2010 he progressed to the distinguished role of North American safety manager through an appointment with PDG Construction Management, where he forged productive relationships through 2015. In 2015, he advanced to the rank of corporate safety director for Orbital Engineering, then between 2016 and 2020, Dr. Pavitt flourished under the title of safety consultant with HazTek Safety Management.
Dr. Pavitt onboarded with Antea Group as a senior product manager in 2020 after which he began his most recent engagement as a construction safety director for STACK Infrastructure in 2021; in 2022, however, he took a step back to partner with his wife in support of Senior Hearts Rescue and Renewal, a nonprofit organization that has saved and re-homed more than 800 dogs since 2017. Notably, civic service remains foundational to his personal mission, and he also regularly shares his time and energy in support of the comprehensive outreach activities hosted by his church.
Dr. Pavitt credits his professional success to an excellent upbringing and the deep, abiding spirituality modeled by his mother. Looking toward the near future, he envisions a continued commitment to collaborative consultancy work, then Dr. Pavitt aims a return to teaching in the construction and safety management disciplines in a part-time capacity as he transitions to partial retirement.
