After leading a long and successful career in music and music education, Dr. Rosene retired and became a professor emeritus of music education at Illinois State University (ISU) in 1990 after more than 20 years on campus. During his distinguished tenure, he also served as the founder and director of the university's Handbell and Choirchime Ensemble. Previously, Dr. Rosene garnered recognition as a teacher at Pittsfield High School from 1957 to 1967. He remains active in the industry today as a consultant on behalf of Handbell Consultants since 1969.
Inspired by several industry experts throughout his career, Dr. Rosene had the pleasure of working with Dr. Emma Knudson, his supervisor, and the chair of the music department at ISU. Dr. Rosene also gained insight and expertise from the director of bands, Wayne F. Sherrard, who mentored him during the beginning stages of his career, and Leslie M. Isted, who taught him various discipline strategies.
In 1988, Dr. Rosene co-authored "Beginning Music Literacy: Teacher's Guide, Level C." More recently, he authored "Percussion! Woodwinds! & Brass! Oh My" via Sea-Hill Press Inc. in 2022 and "The Making Of A Music Educator and Band Director" also via Sea-Hill Press Inc. in 2023.
Aside from his primary career endeavors in education, Dr. Rosene was active civically as the director of the handbell choirs at Bethany Lutheran Church. He was an elder at several local churches. Most honorably, Dr. Rosene served his country in the U.S. Air Force.
In 2022, Dr. Rosene was recognized when a group of his former students established The Dr. Paul and Doris Rosene Band Fund as a permanent endowment to benefit Pittsfield students. Dr. Rosene's late wife was also notably a teacher and band director for many years and became recognized as one of the first female band directors in the state of Illinois in 1951.
Dr. Rosene prepared for his career by earning a Bachelor of Science in music education at Illinois State Normal University, a Master of Art in education psychology and music at Illinois State University, and a Doctor of Education in music education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Rosene also secured credentials as a certified master teacher through the Music Educators National Conference.
Highlighting his professional accomplishments, Dr. Rosene received a Distinguished Service Award from Teachers College and a Service Appreciation Award from Mallmark Incorporated. He was also inducted into the Illinois State University Hall of Fame in 2010.
