Drawing on over three decades of expertise in the field of academia, Ms. Rice specializes in early childhood and elementary education. In December of 2019, Ms Rice assumed the direction of what had been Windward School of Northwest Discovery Lab, as it transitioned to Maple Wood Learning Enrichment Program. An employee at Windward since 2017, she had been the lead teacher and curriculum director. As Educational Director and Lead Teacher of Maple Wood Learning Enrichment Program she is responsible for teaching, curriculum development, parent communication, project management, hiring and supervision of employees, marketing and enrollment, scholarships, business operations and finances.
Ms. Rice initially began her teaching career after graduating from university. She taught elementary age gifted and talented students at the University for Youth program at the University of Denver and worked as a para-educator in Denver public schools assisting children with severe language impairments. She continued her education earning an elementary education teaching credential. Ms. Rice taught primary grades in public elementary schools in northern California. Ms. Rice also presented arts programming through the Plumas County Arts Council. After raising her sons, Ms. Rice returned to teaching in Washington state. She taught coop preschool through Peninsula College, a kindergarten readiness program for First Step Family Support Center in Port Angeles, and Kindergarten at South Whidbey School District.
After completing her masters degree in 2011 she began to teach part time for Crescent School District in their homeschool program Olympic Peninsula Home Connections. Ms. Rice also taught art at the Sequim Boys and Girls Club, and the Sequim Museum and Art Center. Ms. Rice continues to teach at Olympic Peninsula Home Connections as well as operating Maple Wood Learning Enrichment Program.
Prior to embarking on her professional journey, Ms. Rice pursued an education at Humboldt State University, completing her bachelor's degree at the University of Denver in Speech Pathology and Audiology in 1980. She minored in art and dance, and also had concentrations in mathematics and natural sciences. She earned her teaching credential at Sonoma State University in 1983, and a Master of Education from Lesley University in 2011. As a commitment to her field Ms. Rice has been active with several industry-related organizations, including the National Art Education Association and the Washington Art Education Association.
Among her professional accomplishments, Ms. Rice is most proud of her work for Crescent School District, and to have created an educational program at Maple Wood that enables children to be themselves and learn in meaningful hands-on ways. Reflecting on a long career, she attributes much of her success to her creativity and flexibility, as well as to her observations of what was most effective in regards to children's engagement in learning. She has worked her entire career to develop curriculum that is meaningful and helps children thrive. Looking toward the future, Ms. Rice aspires to ensure that Maple Wood Learning Enrichment Program continues to provide children with a positive learning experience and an appreciation for the local natural environment. Ms. Rice hopes to write a book about creating a learning environment that empowers children to learn, develop their individual talents, and feel good about themselves.
