After 37 stellar years in the medical profession, Dr. Stein retired from the industry. As an orthopedic surgeon from Phoenix, he specialized in diagnosing, treating and rehabilitating patients' injuries, diseases and disorders affecting the musculoskeletal system, comprising the bones, ligaments, muscles, joints, nerves, and tendons.
Dr. Stein became a renowned novelist and published two historical fiction books, beginning with "The Oath" in 2016 via Rare Books. Reprinted again in 2018, it is the story of two individuals who survived Auschwitz and the war and became successful physicians in the U.S. This 428-page book was named to Kirkus Reviews Best Books of 2016. Dr. Stein subsequently released his second novel, "The List" in 2022 through the same publisher, which takes readers on a journey into the untold stories of the Holocaust and the slaughter of not only Jews but also the Serbs and Romas (gypsies). "The List" also highlights various acts of vengeance by holocaust survivors on Nazis, many of whom escaped prosecution and went to South America.
Having developed a passion for history and the Holocaust during his extensive travels throughout Europe, Dr. Stein became inspired to write. Now splitting his time between Phoenix and his Midwest home in Batesville, Indiana since retiring from medical practice, he aims to continue traveling and producing more books.
Dr. Stein has also been active civically. He has been a director and remains on the Foundation Board of the Ivy Tech Community College in Indiana. He also served as a member and past president of the Batesville School Board. While in Phoenix, he spent five years on the Board of Medical Examiners and presently serves as a member of the board of the Grand Canyon Institute.
In preparation for his career, Dr. Stein received his undergraduate degree at the University of California, Los Angeles and a Doctor of Medicine at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Initially serving two years as a Resident at the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center, he was drafted into the U. S. Army, performing orthopedics at the William Beaumont Army Hospital in El Paso for four years during the Vietnam War.
To continuously remain abreast of the medical field, Dr. Stein has been a prominent member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. He attributes his success in health care to several great leaders and mentors. Regarding his writing contributions, Dr. Stein notes his continual interest in history and aptitude for writing.
