Embarking on new adventures following retirement, he volunteered as an ESL tutor for Samuel United Church of Christ, was a substitute teacher for Clayton Public Schools, a part-time ESL teacher with the University City School Board, and introduced country dancing to thousands of home school families.
During the early stages of his career, Dr. Ramsay gained valuable expertise in executive roles with Berea College, the John C. Campbell Folk School, and Celo Community, Inc. He began his career as Dairy Manager and Agriculture Instructor for Warren Wilson Junior College in 1952.
Throughout his life, Dr. Ramsay made quite a variety of contributions: board member of Country Dance and Song Society of America; founder of Settlement Institutions of Appalachia; co-founder and first chairman of Folk School Association of America; board member of Human Economic Appalachian Development Corporation; first president of Folk Circle Association, Berea, Kentucky; member of the Richmond-Berea Chapter of the United Nations Association; vice president of Chapter 4048 American Association of Retired Persons in Saint Louis, Missouri; and leader of Kentucky Sacred Harp Singing. Likewise, Dr. Ramsay has written a number of publications, including "Answers Become Question: A Guide for Living at the Interface Between the Finite and the Infinite," "Dog Tales: Some are Tall and Some are True but All Pay Humorous Tribute to Man's Best Friend," and three podcast series: "Dog Tales," "Between the Finite and the Infinite" and "Flippin' Freud."
An expert in his field, Dr. Ramsay holds a Bachelor of Science in vocational agriculture and a secondary school teaching certificate from Berea College. He earned a Master of Science and PhD in animal breeding from Iowa State University. In light of his professional achievements, he had "John Martin Ramsay Day" proclaimed in his honor by the mayor of Berea, Kentucky in 2010. Dr. Ramsay was also named the Berea Peace Hero through the Berea Interfaith Taskforce for Peace in 1985 and won the Lifetime Contribution Award from the County Dance and Song Society of America.
As Director of Recreation Extension at Berea College, he took the Berea College Country Dancers to perform in England, Scotland, Denmark, Mexico, Korea, China, El Salvador, Guatemala, Germany, Italy, and Czechoslovakia.
After retiring (or as he says, "retreading"), Dr. Ramsay was pleased to be designated an "Ageless Remarkable St. Louisan" by The Scottish St. Andrew Society of Greater St. Louis in 2006 and earn the Volunteer of the Year Award from the National Retired Teachers Association in the same year. The cornerstone of his success lay with his family who modeled a desire to make positive impacts in community and on students.
