Chandrakant Giri, PhD, Recognized by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Chandrakant Giri served as an expert in molecular genetics and microbiology research

ROCKVILLE, MD, May 08, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Chandrakant Giri, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Drawing on over five decades of expertise, Dr. Giri specialized in molecular genetics, microbiology, cancer and infectious disease research. Before his retirement in 2015, he found much success as a research microbiologist for the United States Food and Drug Administration and the National Institutes of Health. In this capacity, Dr. Giri was responsible for toxicology, HIV, AIDS, retroviruses, vaccines, environmental diseases, cancer genetics, and viral and bacterial research. He began his vocation as a junior scientist at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre for over two years. In his career-related endeavors, Dr. Giri also served as a private consultant and an ad hoc reviewer for various journals on microbial genetics.

Before starting his professional journey, Dr. Giri pursued an education at Bhavan's College in India. He obtained a Bachelor of Science in chemistry, with a minor in physics and mathematics, in 1964. He continued his academic efforts at the University of Mumbai, earning a Master of Science in biochemistry in 1968 and a post-M.Sc. Diploma in molecular biology from the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru. He then attained a Doctor of Philosophy in biochemistry and molecular genetics from Georgetown University, Washington, DC, in 1978. As a commitment to his field, Dr. Giri completed his postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Rochester in New York and the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Following three years as a postdoctoral staff fellow at the U.S. FDA, he became a tenured research microbiologist and served the FDA and NIH until his retirement in 2015. During this period, he did two sabbatical years, first at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases, Tokyo, Japan, by winning the prestigious Japan Society for Promotion of Science fellowship (2003-04), and invited at the University of Umea, Umea, Sweden 9011-2012).

During his long research career spanning 50+ years, well regarded for his contributions to the field, Dr. Giri has received numerous international scholarships and travel, teaching, and research grants, including several patents for his inventions. One of his noteworthy patents (the U.S. patent #5, 604,118) was developing a eukaryotic expression plasmid vector system in which hitherto functionally unknown genes (such as tremor suppressor genes) may be molecularly cloned and expressed in eukaryotic cells.

Upon his voluntary retirement in 2015, he pursued research in the emerging field of science and religion/theology. Dr. Giri has been teaching the Gaudiya Vaishnava philosophy online for the past two decades. Likewise dedicated to civic advocacy, Dr. Giri volunteers as a worldwide preacher for the International Society for Krishna Consciousness.

Because of his unique background in science and Hinduism, he developed an intriguing hypothesis to scientifically demonstrate the communication between matter and spirit revealed in various scriptures coupled with the centuries-old observation by applying the emerging advances in the science of epigenetics. Dr. Giri proposes that rendering loving devotional service (prema-bhakti) unto the Supreme Person by our bodily senses and the mind may be the language of this communication. Moreover, such devotional service could be the environmental trigger in selectively turning on the switches of crucial genes encoding desirable traits of human personality that are conducive to Prema-bhakti, the love of God, by epigenetic mechanisms of gene expression without altering the underlying DNA sequence. Concurrently, this mechanism may also allow turning off the switches of undesirable human personality traits.

Looking toward the future, Dr. Giri aspires to publish a book on his hypothesis and hopes to contribute toward bridging science and religion/theology. As a prelude to this book, he just published a book (ICB -13-979-8889869603; https://www.amazon.com/s?k=Understanding+and+Practice+of+Parama-jnana%2C+the+Absolute+Knowledge%3A+a+synopsis.&crid=3JH54XSG7KSIG&sprefix=understanding+and+practice+of+parama-jnana%2C+the+absolute+knowledge+a+synopsis.%2Caps%2C67&ref=nb_sb_noss) entitled "Understanding and Practice of Parama-jnana, the Absolute Knowledge: a synopsis."

To earn his academic credential in theology, he made his third master's degree, but now in religion, philosophy, and science in 2020 at the age of 77. He is now accepted to earn his fourth master's degree and continuing toward his second doctoral degree. He is anticipating that the topic of his dissertations will be his hypothesis.

Reflecting on a long career, he attributes much of his success to his mother, who taught him the importance of hard work, independence, and the impact of helping the less privileged, as well as his determination, perseverance, sacrifices, passion for his specialty, and willingness to take risks.
