As the president and founder of Shallowhorn Consulting LLC in Amherst, New York, since 2020, he provides customized, clinically-based training and organizational development for nonprofit and for-profit companies focusing on the behavioral health of their employees, customers, and the community in which they serve.
As a renowned mental health advocate, educator, speaker, and coach, Mr. Shallowhorn has also found success as the project director at the Community Health Center of Buffalo in Buffalo, New York, since 2018 and as the director of youth programs at the Mental Health Advocates of Western New York since 2021. Moreover, he has served as a contributing writer at The Mighty since 2017 and BP Magazine since 2022, as a radio host on 91.3 WBNY since 2022, and as a radio host and producer on Mindful Music 88.7 FM WBFO since 2023.
Deriving inspiration from his long-term recovery from bipolar disorder and co-occurring addiction disorder, Mr. Shallowhorn sought to pursue a career in the industry where he would have the opportunity to give back. During an earlier stage of his career, he held various roles, including as an adjunct professor at Daemen University, teaching courses on addiction, alcoholism, and substance abuse, and serving as the associate director of graduate admissions and coordinator of veteran services. Among several other noteworthy positions, Mr. Shallowhorn was a consultant at Therapy Live – Prepare U, a peer consultant at Horizon Health Services, and the director of community advocacy at the Mental Health Association of Erie County Inc.
Mr. Shallowhorn notably participated in the TEDxBuffalo in Western New York, an independently organized TED event. Admittingly, he says the experience was the most challenging accomplishment he has ever partaken in professionally.
Civically invested, Mr. Shallowhorn is a member and former chairperson for the Erie County Anti-Stigma Coalition and the vice chair for the Mental Health Association in New York State. Additionally, he is a member of Black Achievers Inc. in Buffalo, an organization that promotes the positive image of African American individuals.
Highly educated, Mr. Shallowhorn graduated from Buffalo State University with a Bachelor of Arts in broadcasting in 1987 and a master's degree in student personnel administration, with honors, in 1998. He also became a credentialed alcoholism and substance abuse counselor through the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services and completed the online trauma-informed clinical foundation program at the University of Buffalo.
Highlighting his accomplishments, Mr. Shallowhorn has been the recipient of several accolades, including an Individual Advocacy Award from the United Church of Christ Mental Health Network in 2021, the William B. Hoyt Award for Advocacy from the Child and Family Services of Eric County in 2020, and a Leadership in Healthcare Recognition Award from the National Federation for Just Communities of Western New York in 2020.
