Tyrone C. Pinkins is a distinguished military veteran, lawyer, author, and social justice advocate. Mr. Pinkins is renowned as a community organizer, public interest lawyer, and for his co-founding and leadership of The Pyramid Project, a non-profit organization that promotes equitable access to quality resources, mentors, guidance, and multicultural exposure for underprivileged youth in low-income and underserved communities since 2015.
Mr. Pinkins' early years were marked by his commitment to serving his country. He began his military service in 1996 as a Signal Support Systems Specialist with the 4th Battalion 1st Field Artillery Regiment at Fort Riley, Kansas. His subsequent assignments include serving as a Squad Leader with the 2nd Battalion 37th Armored Regiment in Friedberg, Germany; Section Chief with the 2nd Battalion 69th Armored Regiment at Fort Benning, Georgia; Platoon Sergeant with the 2nd Battalion 3rd Field Artillery Regiment in Giessen, Germany, and Battalion Communications Chief with 1st Battalion 214th Aviation Regiment in Mannheim, Germany. His assignments as a Warrant Officer include Network Security Technician with the 1st Armored Division, Wiesbaden, Germany; and Brigade S-6 OIC with the 10th Regional Support Group in Okinawa, Japan. Mr. Pinkins' military career culminated with his serving as a Presidential Communications Aide for the White House Communications Agency in 2013.
Mr. Pinkins' deployments include three tours in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom where he served in Baghdad, Tikrit and Najaf, Iraq respectively, as well as Operation New Dawn in Baghdad, Iraq. In recognition of his dedicated service, he was honored with a Presidential Unit Citation Award, five Army Commendation Medals and five Army Achievement Awards. He also received a Bronze Star Medal from Brigadier General Martin E. Dempsey in 2004 during his first tour in combat, a Meritorious Service Medal from Major General Terry A. Wolff in 2010 and another Meritorious Service Medal from Major General James C. Boozer in 2013. Added to these, he was awarded a Service Medal from President Barack Obama in 2014 and a Defense Meritorious Service Medal in 2017.
Upon retiring from the Army in 2017, Mr. Pinkins enrolled at the Georgetown University Law Center where he earned a J.D. as well as his LL.M. in National Security Law. Mr. Pinkins' commitment to social justice extends beyond his legal career, and he is passionate about advocating for the needs of individuals in low-income communities. As such, upon graduation he was awarded a prestigious Equal Justice Works Fellowship through which he worked at the Mississippi Center for Justice, serving in some of the most underserved communities in the Mississippi Delta.
Mr. Pinkins is also an accomplished author, having written "23 Miles and Running: My American Journey from Chopping Cotton in the Mississippi Delta to Sleeping in the White House," which was published by New Degree Press in 2020. In this book, he shares his personal story of growing up in poverty in the Mississippi Delta, serving in the military, and working to overcome the obstacles he faced to achieve success.
In addition to his leadership of The Pyramid Project, Mr. Pinkins is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and the Mississippi Federation of Democratic Women.
