For more than two decades, Mr. Smith has served as the principal of Montgomery Smith Inc. in Burlington, Kentucky. In addition to providing specialized services for historic properties, he specializes in designing and engineering new greenhouse structures and environmental control systems and providing surveys, inspections, and evaluations for existing glasshouse structures. Traveling extensively to support the preservation of historic buildings, greenhouses, and conservatories, Mr. Smith services all over North America.
Among a myriad of projects, Mr. Smith has been instrumental in designing new research facilities for colleges and universities and restoring historic conservatories at public gardens throughout the country that have been neglected. Among them is the 1904 Detroit Belle Isle Conservatory, a former playground of the rich and famous that has been neglected for decades.
Mr. Smith's extensive portfolio includes many successful projects, including the Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh, his most significant professional accomplishment. Having been working on restoring this turn-of-the-century conservatory since the 1990s, he renovates one to two of its 14 rooms every other year with the assistance of grants. Other noteworthy projects include the U.S. Botanic Garden Conservatory in Washington D.C., the Langley Hall Rooftop Greenhouse at the University of Pittsburgh, the Brooklyn Waldorf School Roof Garden, the National Trust's Brucemore Estate Greenhouse, and the Birmingham Botanical Garden's Conservatory.
Before establishing Montgomery Smith Inc., Mr. Smith garnered success as the vice president of operations at Rough Brothers Inc. from 1985 to 2001. Now known as Prospiant, the Cincinnati-based manufacturing company specializes in serving the produce, cannabis, and commercial greenhouse markets.
Mr. Smith graduated from the University of Cincinnati's College of Design, Architecture and Art in 1978 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. To remain aware of developments in his field, he is an associate member of the Cincinnati chapter of the American Institute of Architects. Mr. Smith is also a member of the American Public Gardens Association, the Association for Preservation Technology, the Society of Architectural Historians, and, among others, the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
