Born and raised in Ohio, Dr. Yarus began his academic journey at the College of Wooster, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Geology. He furthered his studies at the University of South Carolina, completing a Master of Science in Geology in 1976 and subsequently achieving his Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematical Geology in 1978. His academic credentials are further reinforced by his past certifications from both the Texas Board of Professional Geologists and the American Association of Professional Geologists.
Dr. Yarus embarked on his professional journey in the late 1970s with Amoco Production Co. as an Exploration and Production Geologist. From 1981 to 1986, he worked independently as a Geologist and the Owner of Diversified Resources, Inc. In 1988, he accepted a position at Marathon Oil Company, where he spent six years as a Senior Mathematical Geologist.
His career path led him to various leadership roles in the late 1990s, including a consultancy at Yarus and Associates, the position of Vice President of Consulting for Roxar, and Manager of Reservoir Modeling for Geomath, Inc. From 2001 to 2006, he was the Managing Partner in Quantitative Geosciences, LLP, before the company was acquired by Halliburton Oilfield Services.
Dr. Yarus then served at Halliburton/Landmark for 13 years, initially as a Senior Manager of Earth and Reservoir Management and later as a Technology Fellow, reporting to the executive staff. Here, he conceived and managed the development of a leading spatial modeling software suite, an achievement he considers a career highlight.
Since 2020, Dr. Yarus has been a full research professor at Case Western Reserve University, making significant contributions to academia. A testament to his innovative prowess, he holds multiple patents for processes and devices related to geological modeling.
Recognizing his significant contributions, in addition to his numerous professional publications, he has published 3 edited volumes on spatial modeling with the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. He also received the 2016 International Association of Mathematical Geosciences' George Matheron Lecture Award, among other accolades. Dr. Yarus attributes his success to his clarity, communication, and determination.
As he looks to the future, Dr. Yarus plans to continue his research and teaching in academia and gradually decrease his activities to enjoy more family time and retirement. Nonetheless, he remains fervently passionate about his field, always seeking opportunities for growth and improvement within the industry and the academic community.
