Dr. Matthew Holden Jr. was born in the small town of Mound Bayou, Mississippi to parents Matthew and Estelle Holden. A former student of the University of Chicago, he obtained a BA from Roosevelt University in 1952, and an MA and PhD from Northwestern University in 1956 and 1961, respectively. After commencing his career as a faculty member at Wayne State University in 1961, he ascended the ranks to become an associate professor and full professor, ending his tenure with the university in 1969.
