A seasoned problem solver with years of professional experience in higher education, corporate law, contract management, healthcare regulation, strategic planning, and more, Mr. Meggett presently excels as general counsel for Appalachian State University. Since obtaining the role in 2018, he has helped create the University's Division of Institutional Integrity, which brings together the legal, risk management, and compliance functions. Over the course of the last five years, Mr. Meggett has served as lead counsel for a $288 million public-private partnership residential student housing project, a $130 million public-private partnership Innovation District project that combines academic buildings and employee housing into an innovation district that is powered by a renewable energy district energy system that will be the first of its kind in North Carolina, and various other multimillion dollar projects.
Prior to obtaining his current position, Mr. Meggett worked as the interim dean of the Charlotte School of Law, where he also served as an associate and assistant professor. Throughout his time with the legal institution, he helped develop healthcare law and corporate transactions curriculum. During the early stages of his career, he gained valuable expertise in the field as associate general counsel for UNC Healthcare, and as assistant university counsel and adjunct professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Similarly, Mr. Meggett began his career as a law clerk for Chief Justice Burley B. Mitchell, Jr. of the Supreme Court of North Carolina.
Driven to remain abreast of changes in the legal and educational fields, Mr. Meggett aligns himself with a plethora of organizations such as the North Carolina and American Bar Associations, the National Association of College and University Attorneys, Justice Initiatives Inc., and the American Health Lawyers Association. Likewise, he contributes to his community as a cornerstone member of the North Carolina Minority Executive Roundtable and the Park Scholarship Regional Selection Committee at North Carolina State University. Over the years, Mr. Meggett also dedicated himself to other organizations, including the Charlotte Housing Authority, the North Carolina Health Information Management Association, the Union Symphony Society, and the North Carolina Child Welfare Education Collaborative.
Before embarking on his professional journey, Mr. Meggett earned a diploma from the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in 1987. Subsequently, he expanded upon his professional knowledge, earning a Bachelor of Science in program management from North Carolina State University and a JD from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's School of Law. Due to his outstanding breadth of knowledge, Mr. Meggett served as an editor for the ninth edition of the North Carolina Health Information Management Association's Legal Reference Manual in 2015 and 2016.
In recognition of his professional achievements, Mr. Meggett received the African American Academic Achievement Award from North Carolina State University and the Gressman/Pollitt Appellate Advocacy Award from the University of North Carolina's School of Law. Similarly, he received the Citizen Lawyer Award from the North Carolina Bar Association in 2009 and was named to the Top 100 National Black Lawyers in 2020. The cornerstone of his overall success lay in those who recognized his potential and fostered his industry expertise, including his mother, wife, and children. Looking ahead, Mr. Meggett aims to obtain a corporate board role and complete the Appalachian State University compliance structure and legal arms.
