CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA, June 05, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Mohammad Sharifian Gh. has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Backed by nearly two decades of experience in research and education, Dr. Sharifian Gh. presently serves as a postdoctoral research associate at the University of Virginia. Since 2018, he has dedicated his efforts to a significant project within Laurie Lab of the Department of Cell Biology. His research focuses on comprehending and elucidating the antimicrobial mechanism of the human tear lacritin proteoforms. Through his work, he has made notable breakthroughs, unveiling the pivotal roles played by the bacterial ferrous iron and polyamine transporters in the mechanism. These findings have far-reaching implications for the treatment of WHO's priority pathogens, establishing a strong foundation for potential therapeutic interventions. Consequently, his work has garnered substantial recognition, leading to a remarkable achievement of securing $2.38 Million in grant funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Moreover, he identified the roles of lacritin proteoforms in stabilizing the tear film and pro-homeostatic activity of corneal epithelial cells with implications for the treatment of dry eye disease. Previously, Dr. Sharifian Gh. served as a graduate research and teaching assistant in Dai Lab within the Department of Chemistry at Temple University. During his PhD research in (Physical) Chemistry, he pioneered the utilization of second-harmonic light scattering spectroscopy/imaging for characterizing drug interactions at the living cell membrane. Notably, his research focused on monitoring antimicrobial-induced changes to membrane permeability, as well as determining bacterial surface charge density. In light of his professional achievements, Dr. Sharifian Gh. has been honored many times, earning an Outstanding Graduate Research Award in Chemistry from Temple University's College of Science and Technology (2017), Daniel Swern Fellowship from Temple University's Department of Chemistry (2018), and Travel Grants through the American Society of Cell Biology (2019) and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (2021 and 2023), and a Postdoctoral Researcher Award through the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (2023).
While his career has been filled with highlights, Dr. Sharifian Gh. takes the most pride in what he has learned and developed in the fields of biophysics, molecular biology, and antimicrobials, which has so far resulted in eight first-author and ten co-authored papers in high-ranking journals. He is also honored to have mentored several undergraduate and graduate students, and holding The Teaching in Higher Education Certificate from Temple University (2014). The cornerstone of his success lay with his passion for science and the mentors that he has had throughout his career. Within the coming years, Dr. Sharifian Gh. aims to leverage his expertise as a scientist in challenging projects that result in innovative and pragmatic drug discovery and development in a collaborative corporate environment.
